Have you been thinking about launching your own business, but don’t know if you have the funding, support, or know-how to make it a reality?

Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s Entrepreneur Academy is the perfect opportunity to guide you through the early stages of establishing your own business – and could even see you win up to £5,000 to make your idea a reality.

Starting in October, the Entrepreneur Academy is a six-month course to give residents an opportunity to gain the essential skills needed to set up a business, which includes business planning, finance, marketing, networking, business law, and online business promotion.

The course ends with a special ‘Dragon’s Den’ style competition, where entrants pitch their business proposals to a panel of established local business leaders for a chance to win £5,000 in funding. To apply or find out more visit www.reigate-banstead.gov.uk/business.

Jubilee Celebrations

In February this year, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth.

Horley Town Council is delighted to have participated in the momentous celebrations to mark The Queen’s historic reign by hosting a ‘Big Jubilee Picnic’ event at Horley Recreation Ground. In honor of Her Majesty we have renamed the Ornamental Gardens as The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Garden and planted a Cherry tree as part of the The Queen's Green Canopy.

Oak Tree Processionary Moths

Unfortunately Oak Tree Processionary moths have been spotted in our local area. The caterpillars of oak processionary moth (OPM) are pests of oak trees, and a hazard to human and animal health. OPM was first accidentally introduced to England in 2005, and is subject to a government-led programme of survey and control to minimise its population, spread and impacts.

The Forest Commission have produced an information leaflet. DO NOT:
  • touch or go near caterpillars or nests
  • let children or pets go near caterpillars or nests
  • try to remove nests or caterpillars yourself
Report it to the Forest Commission e-mail it to opm@forestrycommission.gov.uk, or telephone 0300 067 4442
Horley Carnival 2022

This month saw the welcome return of the Horley Carnival after a 2 year pause caused by COVID-19. Floats & groups left from the Victoria Road car park past hundreds of spectators as they made their way to Horley Recreation Ground. This year's theme was Superheroes.
The Recreation Ground saw numerous arena displays by Huxley’s Birds of Prey; BMX display team and many others. The Rec also hosted lots of stalls from local organisations and a wide varierty of food outlets.
Carnival Committee Chair, Cllr Mike George wanted to, 'extend my thanks to all these involved in making the day such a wonderful success. If you want to get involved with the planning of next year's carnival please email horleycarnival@gmail.com'

Thinking of booking a holiday?

It’s been a while since many of us have travelled abroad, so we know there is huge pent-up demand for holidays, with lots of people eager to book a well-deserved break.
But cybercriminals are busy thinking about holidays and travel too … not taking them but exploiting your desperation for a break, with fake websites, advertisements, emails, social media posts, texts and phone calls for holidays, flights, accommodation or pilgrimages that don’t exist.
See here for top tips to make sure your booking is safe: https://www.getsafeonline.org/holidaybooking/
