Update On The Café Progress In Horley Recreation Ground

September 2024

Horley Town Council is very pleased to advise that following a café concession opportunity to provide an innovative and exciting catering experience at the Café Pavilion, Horley Recreation Ground, the council has progressed the re-letting arrangements to the final stages. The premises became vacant earlier this year and this was sadly due to the very sudden and untimely passing of the former tenant.

The successful operator has been selected from an unprecedented number of applications received and a series of detailed procurement stages that followed.  The council expects to make a formal announcement with confirmed reopening arrangements as soon as formalities for the new tenancy have been completed.

Town Plan Progress:
Refurbished Michael Crescent Playground

Smiles were to be seen everywhere for the official opening of the newly refurbished playground at Michael Crescent Centenary Park, on Saturday, 12 October. The ribbon was cut by Reigate & Banstead Mayor Cllr Eddy Humphries who commented "We’re delighted to see such high-quality facilities being delivered by our partner council, Horley Town Council. I’m sure this will get a lot of enjoyment from local residents and visitors to Horley."

The refurbishment of the playground was made possible by a grant from the Reigate & Banstead Borough Council Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy fund. This is part of a wider programme of improvements to the park by the Town Council, following the demolition of the old derelict building last year.

Flood Action Week

We all know how unpredictable British weather can be, and with autumn rains upon us, now is the perfect time to prepare for potential flooding.

This Flood Action Week, we're encouraging residents to take simple steps to protect their homes and families. A little preparation can go a long way!

This reminder is especially important as we approach the one-year anniversary of Storm Babet, which caused widespread flooding across the UK. With the wettest 18 months on record leading up to February 2024, flood risks are higher than ever. In fact, flood alerts have already been issued over the past few weeks in parts of Surrey.

Flood Preparedness Tips:

1. Sign Up for Flood Alerts

Stay in the know by signing up for free flood warnings through the Flood Warning Information Service. You’ll get real-time updates via phone, email, or text, so you can act quickly if needed.

2. Make a Flood Plan

Having a flood plan helps everyone in your household know what to do if flooding happens. Think about what valuables you’d need to move to safety, how to turn off gas and electricity, and where to go if evacuation becomes necessary.

3. Pack a Flood Kit

A flood kit can be a lifesaver! Fill it with essentials like waterproof clothing, a battery-operated radio, bottled water, important documents, and any medications you might need. Store it somewhere easy to access.

4. Protect Your Home

If a flood warning is issued, move items like electronics and personal belongings to higher ground. You might also want to invest in flood barriers or sandbags to help keep water out.

Horley Town Council Grants £2,000 to Horley Lions Club’s Warm Over Winter Campaign

We are pleased to announce that the Town Council has awarded a £2,000 grant from the Horley Edmonds Community Fund to the Horley Lions Club to support their Warm Over Winter (WoW) Campaign, providing gas and electricity top-ups to local households in need. The campaign, in collaboration with the Horley Food Bank and Food Club, assists vulnerable families and elderly residents, helping them stay warm and secure with basic comforts during the winter months.  This grant is part of the Town Council’s broader initiative to support community projects that benefit Horley residents.

In addition to the WoW Campaign, the Horley Lions host events like the Horley Lions Fireworks NightSanta Rounds and run a bookstall on Horley High Street to raise funds for local causes. For more information on the WoW Campaign, please contact the Horley Lions Club Click Here.

Additionally, every year, a budget is allocated to the Council Grants Scheme to give small grants to local voluntary and charitable groups. These grants support initiatives not typically funded by the Council, enhancing opportunities and services for the community.

Volunteer Tree Planting with Surrey County Council In Horley

As part of Surrey County Council's 1.2 million new tree strategy, they have several tree planting opportunities this year.

They would like to invite Volunteers to join them at sites across Surrey. They have two events around Horley and the Gatwick airport area, planting hedgerows and single trees.

These hedgerows will provide food and habitat for wildlife and contribute to meeting their net zero goal.

If you would like to sign up to volunteer, please see their Eventbrite pages using the link below: https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/volunteer-tree-planting-with-surrey-county-council-3745979
