ALPINE CHALLENGE WRAPS FOR 2026
For many years, the RAF Central Fund has provided financial support to the Alpine Challenge. From direct funding to the Winter Sports Alpine Association, to individual attendees supported through our Sports Grants programme.

This year, we were delighted to witness first-hand just how special this event is, with many taking to the slopes for the very first time through to seasoned professionals showing us how it's done. We engaged with RAF personnel over the two weeks, with over 150 individuals sharing their experiences with us – as well as important meetings with sponsors and partners to discuss future support opportunities.

We have also been sharing stories from the event – from inside the team powering the Challenge to first turns and an inspirational Paralympian. Read more from our latest Faces of the Fund below.

FLYING HIGH WITH GLIDING AND SOARING

Cpl David Todd’s epic gliding journey began through the Royal Air Force Gliding & Soaring Association's 'Go Solo' scholarship, a programme designed to help junior ranks take their first steps into gliding with the Association.

RAF Central Fund funding is key to the provision of these scholarships, helping RAFGSA to widen access to their sport and create extraordinary opportunities that enrich the lives of RAF personnel.

Since 2024, nearly £80,000 in Central Fund charitable grants has supported RAFGSA’s operating costs, annual engagement programmes, and the installation of a Gliding Club Simulator at RAF Cranwell.

Reflecting on his incredible experiences during RAFGSA’s annual expedition to the French Alps and his greatest flying achievements to date, David’s journey demonstrates what’s possible when big dreams are backed by a fantastic support network.
