For Cpl Robert Atkinson, a passion for motorsport that began long before joining the RAF has developed into an exciting journey on the race circuit - and now, the pursuit of a world land speed record.
As an RAF Movements Controller, pilot for the RAF Sidecar Team and newly awarded Elite Athlete, Rob has spent years balancing his RAF career with the demands of competing at the highest level of UK sidecar racing. Alongside Sgt Middleton, he has taken the team from its formation in 2018, through championship success and podium finishes, to the British F1 Championship.
With the team now focused on securing a British Championship title, Elite Athlete status is giving Rob the opportunity to dedicate more time to training, machine development and preparation as they work towards their 2027 ambitions.
Rob is also joining the Greyhound Land Speed Record Project as test pilot of the project sidecar ‘pup’, with Sgt Middleton alongside him as co-pilot. Together, they will help test essential equipment ahead of its use on the land speed record bike.
From late nights in the workshop to the highs and lows of racing, Rob’s story shows just how far a passion for motorsport can take you.
