Steaming around Great Britain
Bure Valley Steam Railway (G Naylor)
Settle to Carlisle Railway (Visit Cumbria)
From the beginning, travelling by train has caught the imagination of all those with a sense of adventure and a desire to see more of the world. Meandering their way through stunning countryside, normally inaccessible to vehicles, they are a leisurely and nostalgic addition to any tour itinerary.

Throughout the UK there are fantastic opportunities to include a trip on one of these historic locomotives. Most offer both one way and round trip journeys, so they can be easily worked into itinerary timings on any given day. In some instances they are an alternative way to travel between two destinations, thereby giving your passengers a different mode of transport to experience on their tour. Most lines offer both vintage trains as well as historic stations to explore.  Following is a selection of ideas.

Wales
There are a number of possibilities within this spectacular region of the UK, with many of the main lines being in the north of the principality. These include: the Brecon Mountain Railway, taking in the beauty of the Brecon National Park; Llangollen Railway, following the picturesque River Dee; and perhaps the most well-known – the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, journeying through the Snowdonia National Park.

England
Throughout England there are numerous opportunities to include a railway journey, with almost every region having a line to offer. These include: The Bure Valley Railway, north of Norwich which connects with a cruise on the Norfolk Broads; the Bodmin & Wenford Railway, travelling through the delights of Cornwall; and the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, in the Lake District which combines with a cruise on Lake Windermere.

Scotland
With stunning scenery, a train journey when visiting Scotland is a fantastic way to see the country and enjoy the spectacular views. Train lines here include: the Borders Railway, travelling from Tweedbank into central Edinburgh; the Kyle Line, travelling coast to coast from Inverness to the Kyle of Lochalsh; the West Highland Line, a journey from Glasgow to Fort William, via Loch Lomond; and the Jacobite Steam Train between Fort William and Mallaig.

Museums
As well as the journey itself, there are numerous museums dedicated to the history of rail travel. Amongst these are: STEAM, the museum of the Great Western Railway in Swindon, Wiltshire; The Museum of Scottish Railways at the Bo’Ness & Kinneil Line, to the north of Edinburgh; the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum, just north of Aberystwyth, Wales; and perhaps the most well-known National Rail Museum in central York.
