Oberammergau Passion Play and Theatre
The Oberammergau Passion play Season has been re-scheduled to 2022 and we are now confirming bookings and taking new group registrations for this very special event.
More than 380 Years of Tradition
The World famous Oberammergau Passion Play, traditionally held every 10 years, is due to be performed again throughout the summer of 2022.  The history dates to 1633 when Bavaria was swept by plague.  In Oberammergau alone more than 80 lives were lost.  The elders vowed that if the village was purged of plague they would perform the ‘Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ’ every ten years.  The epidemic came to a standstill, and in 1634 the villagers fulfilled this promise for the first time.  Ever since they have kept their solemn vow.  2022 will see the 42nd Passion Play season.  The play follows the story of Christ’s Passion, beginning with His entry into Jerusalem and ending with His Resurrection and Transfiguration.
A Truly Memorable Experience
The Passion Play is a testimony of religious faith.  It is an outstanding cultural event of considerable religious and secular interest.  The 2010 Passion Play season saw over 100 performances, directed by Christian Stükl.  More than 2,000 local residents participated.  Under Markus Zwink, the musical director, 120 choir members and the 70 members of the Passion Play orchestra performed.  More than 500,000 visitors travelled from all over the World to the Bavarian Alps to take their place in the magnificent Passion Play Theatre and returned home with lasting memories of a unique and moving experience.  The 2022 Passion Play season will continue in the same tradition, welcoming audiences for this unforgettable event.
