EAST ANGLIA.......A ROYAL RETREAT AND
THE UNDISCOVERED GEM
Holkham Hall (Holkham.co.uk)
Sandringham Estate (tournorfolk.co.uk)

Located just to the north east of London, the region of East Anglia covers the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire, and takes in the historic cities of Ely, Cambridge and Norwich

With an extensive scenic coastline and historic towns to visit, this region really is an unexplored gem and known to be a favourite destination for the late Queen Elizabeth II. With a rich history of artists, houses & gardens and museums, you can create an itinerary full of contrasts, including the unique countryside and waterways of the Norfolk Broads, as well as the colourful villages of Suffolk. To follow is a suggested itinerary of the highlights, however there is much more to see and do to create a diverse itinerary for your travellers to enjoy.

Highlights of this tour:
  • The Norfolk Broads
  • Holkham Hall
  • Norwich and Kings Lynn
  • Traditional, unspoilt towns and villages
  • The Artist Trail
  • Cambridge
  • The Sandringham Estate
  • East Ruston Old Vicarage Garden

Flatford Mill (suffolkhideaways.co.uk)

Day 1
– Begin the tour of the region at Flatford Mill. You can stand where John Constable set the scene for his famous ‘The Hay Wain’ masterpiece and explore the exhibition focussed on his life and work in the area. In Sudbury visit Gainsborough’s House, the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough, now a museum and art gallery, before continuing to Dedham to stroll through the former home of Alfred Munnings at the Munnings Art Museum, and include a visit to his art studio. Travel to the regional capital of Norwich via the pretty medieval town of Lavenham and the larger Bury St Edmunds, famed for its ruined Abbey.
Day 2 – Norwich makes an ideal base for this tour and it’s well worth spending time exploring the magnificent Cathedral and castle. An early afternoon visit to the intimate East Ruston Old Vicarage Garden is a must for all gardening enthusiasts, followed by the remainder of the day exploring the unique Norfolk Broads. This extensive waterway is best seen via a cruise boat or the local heritage railway – we highly recommend both.
Day 3 – The coastline to the north of Norfolk is stunning, and dotted with small traditional towns and villages, including Wells-next-the-Sea, Burnham Market, Sheringham and Holt. When exploring this area, one of the most magnificent houses and parklands to visit in the whole region is Holkham Hall. Situated just inland from coastline, this stunning house was designed in the Palladian style and has extensive grounds to explore.
Day 4 – A stay in this region is not complete without a visit to the Sandringham Estate. This is the traditional, much loved home, where Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family celebrated Christmas together each year. The estate was bought for the family as a country retreat and is enclosed within a large garden, including a woodland walk. Continue in the afternoon to the Hanseatic town of King’s Lynn whose nautical history stretches back to the 12th century. Time to explore here before returning to Norwich.
Day 5 – Depart Norwich and travel across the region to the historic horse racing town of Newmarket. The Palace House in the town centre is dedicated to all things equestrian and is a must when in the area. Continue on the short journey to Cambridge. This stunning city of spires is best explored on a walking tour, where an entrance into one of the many colleges can be arranged. Stay in the city for a few nights to fully enjoy all it has to offer, or alternatively continue to Oxford and the Cotswolds, or north to York. London is also within easy reach.
