Everybody knows about famous German festivals, such as Oktoberfest in Munich or Nuremburg’s Christmas Markets, however, there is one German festival that flies under the radar – Carnival in Cologne.
This Rhineland Street Carnival in Cologne is a unique folk festival that casts its spell over millions of visitors year after year. Immerse yourself in age-old traditions with over 480 Carnival Associations, who gather together in costumes and masks, celebrating in their favourite pubs or with friends. The fun starts in the early morning and continues until late at night. It is a week long series of street parties, parades, and special events. Be warned……. if you’re wearing a tie, prepare for the worst: There’s a tradition of cutting off men’s ties which still flourishes.
The inaugural Carnival parade happened in 1823 as a protest against the Prussian occupation of Cologne. From the start back then, as today, people are still coming together to have fun, to celebrate, meet new people, reveling in the atmosphere that is somewhat tongue-in-cheek with hints of dark humour.
Arriving on Saturday 1st March 2025 giving you the opportunity to enjoy the events and the atmosphere at your own pace. Parades take place on the Saturday, Sunday and ‘Rose Monday’ plus much more.
Tour includes: 3 nights half board, return porter service. Return short Channel crossings with DFDS Ferries. 4 days coach services.
