The gently rolling hills and dramatic waterfalls of the Yorkshire Dales contrast with the North Yorkshire Moors extensive moody heathland. There’s the opportunity to discover Hartlepool’s unique heritage, exploring along the impressive North Eastern coastline with its sheer cliffs and long golden, sandy beaches.
Start your break with a leisurely day heading down the North Yorkshire Coast. Travelling through Saltburn by the Sea, passing the traditional fishing villages of Staithes and Runswick Bay before arriving in Whitby for a day to explore the town at your own pace, be it up the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey or to sit on the quay or beach to enjoy fish and chips. Returning, past Scaling Dam and Guisborough.
Venture to the traditional market town of Thirsk, nestled between the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. Visit the World of James Herriot before enjoying a wander about the shops and cafes. On to the picturesque town of Helmsley, via Sutton Bank, where Ryedale leaves the moorland and joins the Vale of Pickering. From its medieval castle ruins and enchanting walled garden to its bustling market square and array of independent shops, Helmsley offers a unique blend of old-world charm and modern amenities. Alternatively, consider a visit to Rievaulx Abbey, the impressive ruins of one of England's most powerful Cistercian monasteries. (Admission not included) before returning back through Stokesley.
We head to Hartlepool to embrace the town’s maritime culture with a visit to the National Museum of the Royal Navy. Travel back in time to the 18th century seaport and its beautiful waterside setting. With time to explore the town at your own pace, why not discover the heritage of The Headland, Hartlepool’s very own historic gem. (Parts you will recognise from the TV series ‘Vera’) By following the Headland Story Trail, each trail marker reveals a unique story from the legend of the Hartlepool Monkey to tales of shipwreck.
