The Scottish Highlands, wild and rugged, have a timeless quality. At their very heart, where the River Tummel flows to the Tay, sits the historic small town of Pitlochry. We start by heading through Perthshire, via Aberfeldy, to Drummond Castle Gardens on the outskirts of the market town of Crieff. One of Scotland’s finest gardens, established in 1490, with the formal gardens first laid out in the 1630’s and Italian style parterre added in 1830. Afterwards, we return to Pitlochry, skirting Perth and historic Dunkeld, to the Scottish Baronial splendour of Athol Palace and its fascinating museum, followed by a delightful cream tea.
A relaxed beginning to the day as we head to Loch Tummel and the panoramic ‘Queens View’. Originally named after Queen Isabel, wife of Robert the Bruce in the 14th century not after Queen Victoria as she presumed in 1866. Travel on to Blair Castle, home to the Dukes of Athol for 19 generations, where the family history is brought to life against a backdrop of fine 18th century interiors and Scottish baronial architecture. A day to revel in the wonderful Highland scenery, arriving in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park and a visit to Rothiemurchas Estate. Joined by a ranger to accompany you on a coach safari to get the best views of the surrounding countryside and the chance to meet the resident deer and Highland Cows.
