The east coast of Scotland is known for its pretty beaches, charming fishing villages, and historic castles. The west coast, on the other hand, boasts rugged, dramatic landscapes, and a more moody, wild beauty. Here, we give the chance to sample both.
Based for two nights at the The Park Hotel, Montrose located just a few minutes walk from the High Street and the beautiful beach. Discover the elegant Georgian House of Dun where costumed guides lead you through this country house and it’s fascinating history. Why not head along the Angus coast for a scenic drive to Stonehaven where Dunottar Castle is dramatically sited on the cliffs to the south of the town. Alternatively take some time to explore Montrose at your own pace.
As we head to the lovely island of Bute, we stop on the way at Glamis Castle for a guided tour (STA) of the majestic childhood home of Her Majesty the Queen Mother to explore the Castle and Gardens.
Taking the late ferry from Wemyss Bay, it’s a short trip to Rothesay for a two night stay at the Glenburn Hotel, situated in an elevated position with fantastic views across the Firth of Clyde and the Kyles of Bute. For such a compact island, Bute has some extraordinarily varied landscapes. From the lush, fertile and rolling hills of the island's heart to the craggy, heather-covered moorlands of the north and the delightful sandy beaches around the coastline.
A relaxing morning followed by a scenic tour of the island with a stop at Mount Stuart, an outstanding and flamboyant Victorian, Gothic style mansion with beautiful gardens within a 300 acre estate. Continue around the island allowing time for photo stops at the stunning bays of Scalpsie and Ettrick.
