Located in the very north of Europe, this beautiful country has much to offer visitors, from magnificent fjords to Arctic adventures, and fascinating museums to vibrant towns and cities. With their unassuming and friendly nature, the Norwegians offer a warm welcome to their guests. To follow are just a few of the many reasons to travel here and include a tour to Norway as part of a European programme.

With the capital, Oslo, located in the south of the country, most tours begin or end here thanks to the many flight, rail, road and ferry connections to other regions of Scandinavia, Europe and beyond. Oslo itself is a compact city which is constantly re-inventing itself with new buildings and attractions to enjoy. It’s worth staying here for a few days to explore what’s on offer, including the Viking Ship Museum, Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Norwegian Folk Museum, Munch’s Artwork and the Holmenkollen Ski Museum and Tower. Travelling further into this region, there is much to see and do including the largest stave church in the country at Heddal, the magnificent Hardangervidda Plateau (home to Europe’s largest stock of reindeer), and relaxing on a leisurely cruise of Lake Nisser.

Arguably the most visited region of Norway, this area is famed for its stunning fjords and charming towns and cities. With a spectacular and rugged coastline, travelling through this area is an adventure – on both scenic roads journeys, and via the many ferry crossings regularly sailing across the fjords. Places of interest and activities here include the historic coastal cities of Bergen, Ålesund and Trondheim, as well as the Jostedalsbreen Glacier and Museum. This region is also home to one of the most scenic rail journeys in Europe on the Flåm Railway, along with many leisurely fjord cruise possibilities, notably on the Geirangerfjord. With Bergen easily accessible in a day from Oslo via road or the regular train service, it is possible to include this beautiful region within a tour itinerary.

Travelling further into the north of Norway gives the visitor a completely different experience from the other areas of the country. Here, visitors cross the Arctic Circle to one of the most traditional regions of the country. One of the jewels to visit are the Lofoten Islands. Easily accessible by regular ferry from the mainland, they are home to a reconstructed Viking Chieftain’s house at the Lofotr Vikingmuseum, the fascinating Stockfish Museum at Å, and numerous traditional fishing villages dotted around the coastline. Other places of interest include the Arctic Cathedral in Tromsø, the preserved Trading Post at Kjerringøy, numerous art galleries, as well as nature and wildlife experiences. There are possibilities to cruise the various coastlines and fjords the region has to offer too.

There are fantastic hotels throughout Norway offering first-rate accommodation and food. These range from city centre to fjord side locations, and chain to family-run hotels. Tailor-making tours to suit every standard, budget and style of itinerary is possible. Via the excellent road, flight, rail and ferry links, travel from Norway to her neighbours Sweden and Denmark is more than feasible, offering a full Scandinavia tour. With the Baltic states, northern Europe and the UK all on her doorstep, Norway can easily be included into a broader tour of this region. Though, with so much to explore, she is more than worthy of a stand-alone tour too.
