Starting by hopping over the border this morning for a scenic drive through the county of Rutland for a visit to Barnsdale Gardens. Renowned for having Britain's largest collection of individually designed gardens including a wonderful variety of designs, plant species and horticultural techniques. Time permitting, visit the small town of Oakham before arriving at Rutland Water reservoir for a relaxing cruise and a chance to view Rutland’s most famous landmark, Normanton Church.
Head to Doddington Hall and Gardens. An Elizabethan Hall and much-loved family home for over 400 years, offering a unique insight into family life through the ages. Discover at the your own pace ‘The Tent Room’ or pop in the ‘Forgotten Room’, full of items that the family have little use for, but can’t bear to part with. Meander through the wonderful Gardens which remain faithful to the original Elizabethan layout. Take time to wander through the extensive farm shop or enjoy a coffee and cake in one of the two cafes. Time allowing, take the short drive into the city of Lincoln for time at leisure.
Travelling through the pretty village of Brant Broughton and Carleton le Moorland to Norton Disney to marvel at ‘On Freedom’s Wings’, the poignant, life size sculpture of an Avro Lancaster Bomber in flight, heading home. On to the International Bomber Command Centre. The interactive exhibition tells of those who served during the bombing campaigns of World War II. Overlooking Lincoln Cathedral, see the Walls of Names, the Spire Memorial and walk through the Peace Gardens. Travelling to Woodhall Spa and the impressive Peto Gardens at the Petwood Hotel, home to the ‘Dambusters’, squadroned there during WW2. Designed by landscape designer Harold Peto, enjoy a leisurely stroll to absorb the garden’s ambiance before rounding the day off with a Cream Tea.
