October 2020 saw one of our regular groups travel to Devon for an enjoyable stay. This local history group from Oxfordshire, travelled by coach to Plymouth, one of Britain’s largest seaports. It has a rich maritime heritage and has bustled with adventurers, emigrants, merchant traders and sailors for centuries. The Pilgrim Fathers set sail for the Americas in 1620 from Plymouth, on board the Mayflower, and the city celebrated the 400th anniversary of this historic voyage this year. The hotel is located in the heart of this dynamic ocean city and this tour included time to explore its many attractions. In contrast, it also allowed the opportunity to enjoy the landscape and countryside of South Devon, including a guided tour of Dartmoor National Park, a visit to the wonderful Rosemoor Gardens and an insight into the lives of monks at Buckfast Abbey, still a working monastery today.
Our group chose to stay at the 4* Jurys Inn Plymouth isituated in the heart of Plymouth city centre, just 10 minutes’ walk from the Historical Barbican and Drakes Circus shopping centre. Each room features a Dream bed with crisp white linens, a flat-screen TV and spacious bathrooms with spa toiletries. Tea and coffee facilities and free Wi-Fi are also included. A hot and cold breakfast buffet is served daily with a selection of a la carte dishes. Organic coffee, Twinings tea and Bonne Maman preserves are offered. Dinner includes 3 courses with a choice of 3 starters, mains and desserts.
