AI is changing what workers need to know rather than eliminating skilled jobs

Pearson released new research at the WorldSkills Conference examining a part of the AI-and-jobs debate that gets far less attention: what AI means for the skilled workers who keep factories running. The report finds that in these roles, AI is more often reshaping the work than replacing workers outright - changing tasks, workflows and expectations of competence. At the same time, employers are facing a major expertise challenge: 99% of openings across the UK occupations analysed are expected to come from replacing workers who retire, change careers or leave the workforce. Pearson calls the result an emerging “triple capability gap”: workers increasingly need role-specific AI literacy and judgement, human capabilities like communication and adaptability, and the hands-on know-how traditionally passed down by experienced colleagues.
