Easing customers along the innovation journey

My recent house move has left me waiting on the installation of a phone line and broadband, which has meant all of my online work over the last couple of weeks has been via a very patchy 3G connection using my phone tethered as a personal hotspot. The lack of the fibre speeds that I’d taken for granted over the past few years has been enormously frustrating, but it has illustrated to me just how poor many websites are in terms of their performance over a low speed connection. And that got me thinking, in our own designs, about how much we might be taking for granted in the capabilities of our customers. I’m certainly not advocating designing simply for the lowest common denominator, but we have to ensure that we’re doing enough to bring customers along with us on the innovation journey, and not risk narrowing our markets by leaving key customers behind.

With best regards
