The perfect blend of technology and creativity
If you’ve ever wondered why the pronunciation of many words in English seems to bear no resemblance to the spelling, then one of the reasons is likely to be the Great Long Vowel Shift in Middle English, which changed the way long vowels are spoken. This mini revolution began in southern England in around 1400, but took some 300 years to travel the length of the country. Doubtless today, with our numerous communications technologies, it would all happen much more quickly, and my own rash conclusion was that technology accelerates change. But I wonder if that’s a trap we fall into too easily. Rather, technology is a tool that enables change to be accelerated. I’ll admit that’s a very subtle distinction, but I think it’s important nonetheless. As machine builders, we are right to be excited by what technology enables us to do; combine that with our own creativity – what we do with those technologies – and we have the perfect recipe to drive the industries we serve forwards.
With best regards
