AI – friend or foe for machine builders?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is never far from the headlines, but it hit with a vengeance in the last few days after it emerged that an supposed interview with Michael Schumacher in German magazine Die Aktuelle in fact consisted of AI-generated quotes. Elsewhere, there has been many an over-drink discussion about the number of jobs AI might be on the verge of making completely redundant. In the world of industrial automation however, the likes of AI and machine learning are nothing new – applications including predictive maintenance, real-time anomaly detection, on-the-fly parameter optimisation and more are all proven technologies. What more can be done remains to be seen; but for machine builders, AI is surely a friend rather than a foe.

With best regards
