Lightweighting can require new thinking for fastening and joining

When we think about ‘lightweighting’, traditionally we’re talking most often about either the automotive industry or aerospace. But it is becoming a common goal across a whole raft of sectors as everyone looks to design less expensive or more environmentally friendly products. Better production processes, new materials and approaches such as additive manufacturing are all part of the story, but fastening, joining and bonding processes are important considerations, too. The best approach won’t always be the traditional approach, especially where new materials are involved, but the scope of what is possible is expanding all the time. The key, as always, is to think about it right at the start of the design.

With best regards
