Output down in March, but manufacturer optimism is rising

A slight fall in manufacturing output in March, following a small rise in February, highlights what an up and down year 2023 is likely to be. The latest Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) paints a picture of a market which is subdued overall, with exports again decreasing and new order books showing only fractional growth. But even as rumblings of recession return to the conversation, business optimism has actually strengthened, with almost 60% of manufacturers forecasting output to rise over the coming year. Hold onto your hats, though; it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

With best regards
