Could manufacturers find opportunity in adversity?

The latest growth figures suggest that the UK economy ended 2022 with fractional growth, but every indicator suggests that recession is surely coming this year. Industrial commentators who are looking for silver linings argue, though, that a shallow recession could be a help for manufacturers, giving them the breathing space they need after the successive challenges of Brexit, Covid and Ukraine. The thinking is that 2023 could provide the space to properly assess technology requirements, to install new machinery and bed-in new processes. Making that sort of investment in uncertain times will require a significant holding of nerve, but the UK’s manufacturing sector is adept at finding opportunity in adversity.
