Manufacturing R&D spending hits a record high

UK manufacturing sector R&D spending hit a record high of £4.4bn in the first quarter of 2022, up 6% annually, according to analysis of the latest ONS data by Catax. As the company’s CEO Mark Tighe comments: “The fact that this performance comes despite a background of rising costs and labour shortages shows there’s plenty of resilience there to weather any recession.” That final word, though, will shoot sparks of worry through many companies, with commentators now expecting the UK to enter recession within the next 9-12 months. And as a further word of caution, the manufacturing sector’s R&D performance was still worse than UK industry as a whole. Now would be a good time for politicians across all parties to move support for this vital sector a little higher up the political agenda.
