What are the implications of the EU AI Act?I’ll admit upfront that I haven’t yet had the time to fully wade through the detail of the EU’s new artificial intelligence act, but I have noted that the UK government is looking at following suit with something similar. The EU act defines three levels of risk from AI: unacceptable, high and limited, and then goes on to give some specific examples which, really, are an extraordinarily narrow subset of all the areas where AI is being or could be used. Right now, the legislation doesn’t appear to cover AI used in controllers within the typical industrial environment, but note that the legislation does cover AI in management and operation of critical infrastructure – which might include the control systems used in the likes of water treatment and power generation. I hope a lot more detail is going to follow, because right now this is all sounding a little vague. With best regards Mark Simms, Editor
