The smart money is on an end of year general election

The tax cuts and increased investment in manufacturing announced in the Spring Budget have got many wondering if that might be the prelude to an announcement of a May general election, but among the analysts I’ve spoken to, the smart money seems to be on the back end of the year – and even then, that’s assuming that the Tory party conference in October goes well and that the Conservatives have closed the gap on Labour. If not, then it might be as late as January 2025. So, a good thing or a bad thing? It seems to me that the main consequence of general election is companies pushing the pause button on investment – something that we definitely don’t want to see in a challenging first half of 2024. Perhaps having most of the year behind us before we have to start thinking about election shenanigans will leave us all on a stronger footing.

With best regards
