Manufacturing sector is taking almost 6% less annual leave

A new report from Access PeopleHR analysed data from 2022-23 and found that the manufacturing sector has seen a 5.79% drop in annual leave taken per employee. Of course there could be many reasons why employees aren’t taking their full holiday entitlement, but I wonder if the pressure of the job is one of those. If it is, then that’s a problem on two counts: the first is that it can’t be good for mental wellbeing; but I wonder, too, if it’s indicative of the skills shortage within businesses? If it is, then it’s just one more element of a growing labour challenge in the sector – and yet another reason to put automation high on the agenda for 2024.
