New deal strengthens consumers’ rights to repair

EU negotiators have reached a provisional deal on a new bill that aims to reduce waste by making repairs more accessible and cost-effective. Doubtless there will be get-out clauses for companies who feel their products are too complex or might compromise the safety of non-specialist repairers, but it seems to me that manufacturers’ environmental credentials can only be strengthened by the promise of products that extend lifespan, reduce waste and support a more sustainable and circular economy. Inevitably, though, this will place increased onus on ease of disassembly and reassembly, and for many designers that is going to mean a reassessment of their fastening and bonding choices. I can only encourage meaningful conversations with vendors at the earliest stages of the design process.

With best regards
