Can automation help return the UK to the world elite?
From a top five ranking in 2000, it has been reported that the UK dropped out of the top 10 manufacturing nations in 2022. While manufacturers are optimistic about prospects for the remainder of 2024, it is still a concern that the UK no longer ranks among the world elite. Some might point to the loss of 34,000 jobs in UK manufacturing as a sign that the sector is struggling, but the counter argument is that there are still over 60,000 vacancies, and that surely is the bigger issue: analysis by BDO suggests that shortfall is costing the sector some £6bn in lost output. It's yet another argument to increase investment in automation.
With best regards
