Do we need faster adoption of automation technologies?
The UK's berry growers have been in the news recently, with claims that as many as 40% of businesses could go to the wall in the next couple of years. Almost half of them are now making significant losses, with their costs rising faster than the retail price of the berries. One area they are asking the government to look at is visa changes for migrant workers, on whom the sector has long relied. That's not an uncommon story across the broader food manufacturing sector, and perhaps making it easier to migrant workers to gain employment in the food and beverage industry is part of the solution. But so, too, is automation. Our industry is already one of the largest adopters of automation technologies such as robotics, but do we need to go further, faster?
With best regards
