The true cost of manufacturing downtime

Machine builders looking for a new angle to pitch advanced automation to their end user customers might want to highlight new research from IDS-INDATA, which reveals the true cost of manufacturing downtime in 2025 and the critical need for digital transformation. Unplanned downtime costs industries billions annually; the automotive sector alone could see projected losses of up to £12 billion in 2025, while the high regulated pharmaceutical sector faces between £500 million and £1 billion in losses due to extended shutdowns. A key cause of this downtime is aging machinery and infrastructure, with sectors such as food processing, textiles and packaging still relying on legacy equipment prone to mechanical failure. The report analyses manufacturing downtime by sector, looking at average number of downtime incidents, average duration per incident, the cost per hour of downtime, and the total projected cost in 2025. It's well worth a read.
