Dear Prospective Parent/Carer,

Each month going forwards now we will have a particular focus on a key element of the curriculum or facilities at Heathside Walton-on-Thames to give parents and students an insight into the high-quality curriculum we will be offering.

Heathside Walton Library Facilities

One key design feature of the new school is the fabulous library facilities that will be at the heart of the school.  Reading and the development of a student’s vocabulary relates to academic success.  Vocabulary size is a convenient proxy for a whole range of educational attainment abilities; not just reading, writing, listening and speaking but also general knowledge of science, history and the arts.  It’s an important point of knowledge acquisition and the curriculum.
We will strive to engender a love and passion for reading via the Literacy lessons which all students in Years 7 and 8 will have once a week.

In these lessons, students will use the programme ‘Accelerated Reader’ which is a reading and monitoring programme that aims to foster independent reading. The software assesses each student’s reading age and suggests books that match pupils’ needs and interests. When students finish their book, they will take computerized quizzes on the book they have read to check their understanding.

In addition to ‘Accelerated Reader’ we will develop students’ literacy skills in all their lessons across the curriculum and provide intervention and support for any students who may need help to develop their reading. Our main aim is to engender a love of reading that will stay with students through to adulthood. We will ensure that students celebrate books and the literary world via such events as World Book Day, visiting authors, competitions and creative writing enrichment activities.
Thank you for your support and interest to date for your son/daughter joining the Heathside Walton-on-Thames school in September 2022.  We are delighted to have had positive feedback and a high level of interest to date. The online application form can be found here.

If you know of other prospective parents who would like to receive the updates please ask them to complete the online form here.
