Welcome
October 2023
Welcome to the CAPS Independent Advocacy newsletter! This is a very special edition as we have two exciting events to tell you about, read on to find out more!
The People's Conference: what makes a house a home?
CAPS’ Lothian Voices collective advocacy group warmly invite you to this year’s People’s Conference. It is by and for people with their own lived experience of mental health issues. This year the topic is the housing crisis in Lothian.

It will be from 10.30am until 4.30pm at Norton Park Conference Centre on Wednesday 8th of November.

Attending the conference is completely free and includes a free lunch. We will collectively discuss questions about the housing crisis' impact on people and their mental health. There will be an interactive zine-making workshop focusing on the housing crisis topic.

After reflecting on our findings during the day, we will come together to write an open letter to Paul McLennan, who is the Scottish Minister for Housing, about what we need from housing and what changes we want to see.

If you have experience of mental health issues and you’d like to attend this event, please register by contacting Azra at collective@capsadvocacy.org or 07436102762 by 3rd November. Please also let Azra know your dietary and/or access requirements, and if you would like to request any assistance to get to the venue.
The first People's Conference took place in 2014 and responded to the Lothian Mental Health strategy that had been published at the time.
You can find out more about the People's Conference and its origins in this blog from Azra who facilitates the Lothian Voices group who organise the conference.
