JANUARY 2023
I can’t say I’m writing this newsletter looking back at January fondly. Our region has suffered another devastating loss of life due to the evils of knife crime, emergency workers have suffered horrific attacks and once again report findings show our area continues to be the worst in the country for child poverty. Sometimes things have got to get worse before they get better, and I hope that’s the case for 2023.

Needless to say I know the community spirit of the North East will shine through the tragedies and hardship. Our determined efforts to fight poverty and fight crime feel more important than ever and together we will keep doing all we can to ensure Northumbria is a safe place where people can thrive, access opportunities and live free from the fear of crime.

Best wishes
Kim McGuinness
Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner

FIGHTING CRIME

SUNDERLAND CRIME DOWN THANKS TO FESTIVE POLICING OPERATION

Results from our neighbourhood policing team in Sunderland certainly set out how we mean to go on fighting crime in the area. A dedicated festive operation aimed at tackling disorder in the city centre saw Christmas crime rates drop by 37 per cent.

Other activity led to officers and partners stopping more than 160 people, as well as making 10 arrests and issuing 44 dispersal notices. My thanks go to all involved in these continued efforts to improve lives in the area.

PREVENTING CRIME

KNIFE CRIME REMAINS A TOP PRIORITY

It’s the job of my Violence Reduction Unit to bring everyone together to fight violence and crime. I’m pleased to share that there are big plans ahead to build on existing work and explore new interventions. From putting knife crime prevention specialists in our hospitals to help those presenting with injuries who are vulnerable to crime, to rolling out our Student Support Champions to more schools across the region, we are determined to get ahead of the knife culture problem. Here are some powerful images from a recent VRU project held at the Beacon Centre in South Shields. The message from these kids is clear – ‘drop the weapons’. Read more HERE.

IMPROVING LIVES

TACKLING ASB IN COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE NORTH EAST

January marked a year since I set up my ASB Board - a regional approach to fighting ASB and bring our excellent local public services together. At a board meeting in South Shields last week we looked back at the highlights, successes and key learnings from the past year. Here are just some of the Safer Transport Northumbria highlights:

- 91 youth provision patrols completed across transport network during Oct - Dec '22
- Deployed teams across transport network on key events to identify vulnerability & prevent crime
-Over 2600 downloads of our Safer Transport App. If you haven’t got it already on your phone, you can download it HERE.

IN OTHER NEWS...

You may be aware that I am standing to be a candidate for the new role of North East Mayor. I see this role as a continuation of the work I have already started as your Police Commissioner and will always strive for our region to be the best it can be, whatever my role.

For now, I'll continue to oversee a police force that is committed to fighting crime, and I’ll continue to work with others to fight poverty.

PICTURE OF SUCCESS

My Christmas card competition winner, Khyler form Academy 360 in Sunderland was all smiles being presented with her framed artwork in assembly last month. What a star.

MORE COPS ON THE STREETS

I was delighted to welcome 60 new recruits to the force in January. More officers on the streets is what everyone wants and we are doing everything in our power to maintain an efficient and effective police service.

WE'VE LANDED FUNDING TO FIGHT RURAL CRIME

I’m proud we are the ONLY force in the country that is specifically addressing the needs of our rural communities through a successful bid for Safer Streets Funding – this shows our absolute commitment to fighting and preventing crime across ALL areas. In the pipeline we have targeted operations, new technologies and prevention tools to be rolled out in Northumberland.
