FEBRUARY 2023
People here in the North East tell me they want more police officers out on the streets, in the heart of our communities. I'm with you on that. To deliver this though, we need the Government to properly fund local policing and fully reverse the cuts and lost officers stretching back to 2010.

Just like our councils and NHS, I’ve called on Government to rethink how we back our essential public services, but those pleas have fallen on deaf ears, and we’re left facing difficult financial choices in the Northumbria force area.

Next year alone we face having to find £11m in savings as a result of rising inflation and pay costs – extra pressures the Home Office has refused to fund.

The good news though is that we’re restructuring the force to give you more of what you want – and that means 134 new neighbourhood officers will be out policing local communities soon, the largest single increase in our neighbourhood policing numbers in a generation.  I’ll be setting out more details of these plans in the coming months.

Best wishes,

Kim

FIGHTING CRIME

MY PRIORITIES TO FIGHT KNIFE CRIME ACROSS THE NORTH EAST

Every time we lose a young life to violence we are reminded of just how important the prevention work we are doing is. This month I laid out determined plans to tackle serious violence in the North East. There is lots happening and plenty more to come.

As well as delivering sessions in schools and youth clubs, other promising approaches to reach those on the cusp of crime and encouraging them to make positive choices are happening across the region as part of plans to reach young people before they reach for a knife.

You can find out more bout work from my Violence Reduction Unit below such as:

·       A&E navigators
·       Student Support Champions
·       New team clamping down on known offenders

YOUTH WORK DRIVING DOWN ASB IN WITHERWACK

Youth work is putting a stop to anti-social behaviour in and around the bus terminus in Witherwack, where only one report has been made since the start of the new year.

Together for Children have been funded to roll out focused youth intervention work in and around the bus terminus to tackle ongoing problems.

Having youth workers on hand at our bus stations to listen, chat and guide young people is clearly having a positive impact on and is improving lives for everyone.

IMPROVING LIVES

FINDING SOLUTIONS TO HELP VICTIMS OF ASB

Anti-social behaviour can affect people in many different ways and seriously harm our communities.

That is why I committed to ensuring victims had their voices heard by implementing a new region-wide review process to bring agencies together to find the victim solutions.

So far, the Community Trigger is making an impact. It’s improving many lives and helping build confidence and trust in the system. Its effectiveness hasn’t gone unnoticed either as it has recently been nominated for a best project award by community safety specialists Resolve ASB. Well done to all involved.

STREETWISE COMES TO JESMOND PARK ACADEMY

Last month I went along to Jesmond Park Academy to find out more about how they are working with the fabulous Streetwise to offer youth work, counselling and much more delivered directly in the school. A great way of reducing demand and waiting times to access already stretched support services.

91 ARRESTS FOR COUNTY LINES

Northumbria Police has made 91 arrests since December in relation to County Lines.

There’s no hiding from the fact that County Lines is a serious threat to young vulnerable people, and these are fantastic results from our force.
