3 JULY 2023

Earlier this month I visited Choices 4 Growth up in Berwick, Northumberland. As I hear all too often, they are facing a funding crisis and I can’t begin to explain what a devastating blow it would be if the local community loses them.

Jacqui and her team provide vital well-being and mental health support to young people, their families, and schools. They do such great work yet are in a financial position that is far from great.

Not only are organisations like Choices 4 Growth struggling with finances and demands, so too are our police. Mental health-related incidents in the Northumbria Police force area have increased by 152%. A shocking rise and a rise with consequences. Overstretched officers shouldn’t have to act as mental health specialists.

That’s why I have teamed up with Everyturn Mental Health and together we’re calling on Government for urgent investment in these services. Northumbria Police works hard to ensure they are always there for those in need but people in a mental health crisis need to be looked after by healthcare specialists. The 24/7 availability of our police is taken for granted.

It's OK not to be OK but what is not OK is the funding of mental health services. I’ll keep fighting for change.

Take care,

Kim

FIGHTING CRIME

I’M HANDING OVER £100K OF CASH SEIZED FROM CRIMINALS TO COMMUNITY CAUSES ACROSS THE NORTH EAST

Northumbria Police has had some excellent results fighting crime lately. A confiscation order for £33,621 was issued following a case where an Ashington drug dealer fled to Spain but was later extradited and jailed for 13 years. Also, in March a local drug dealer was ordered to pay back thousands he had earned selling Class A drugs on Wearside. He was also sentenced to 9 years in prison.

It’s good work like this that contributes to my Operation Payback funding pot and applications have just opened for the 5th round of the fund. This means I’ll be investing over £100,000 into communities and projects to improve lives and prevent crime. This now takes the Op Payback total to over £1million invested across our region.

PREVENTING CRIME

HOW WE'VE BEEN WORKING TOGETHER TO KEEP GIG GOERS AND FAIR FANS SAFE THIS SUMMER

I always feel like Summer has begun when the Hoppings comes to town. The fun of the fair certainly gets Newcastle buzzing. In fact, the whole North East has been buzzing this month. On one night alone Sunderland hosted international pop star P!nk meanwhile local hero Sam Fender wowed the crowds at St James’ Park. The North East has really felt on a high. We know how to put on a show up here and we certainly don’t want anything spoiling the fun for gig goers and fair fans either. That’s why I invested in lots of extra work – more police patrols, more youth workers, increased security teams on the Metro and increased council resource. Thanks to everyone who has helped our region to shine, and to do so safely

IMPROVING LIVES

I’VE LAUNCHED A NEW VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS STRATEGY TO DRIVE CULTURE CHANGE IN THE NORTH EAST

These lovely colleagues at Northumbrian Water are the latest signups to our workplace domestic abuse champions scheme. The more organisations and businesses we have looking out for colleagues and pushing for culture change the better.

My commitment to building on work like this and a whole raft of other prevention and intervention work is detailed in my new VAWG strategy that I launched at the start of the month, and you can read more about HERE.

DID YOU KNOW?
Operation Coastwatch is back in North Tyneside and its recent success has seen anti-social behaviour rates plummet to their lowest since 2014. Superb results. More of this work on its way with Northumbria Police working closely with North Tyneside Council and the Metro to tackle pockets of disorder along the North East’s incredible coastline.

SUMMER READY

Also, this summer my VRU is funding over £120K of summer activities to give local kids opportunities and help keep them out of trouble. You can find out more about how amazing youth projects like Inspire Performance in South Shields can change lives by having a listen to one young lad's story HERE.
