Last week the Home Secretary defiantly put the recent disorder behind us and delivered a hopeful, tough-talking speech outlining Government’s determination to deliver safer streets for the country - a determination I share for us here in the Northumbria Police force area too.

I welcome new powers around issues that I know matter to local people and will help our police force tackle their top priorities. Pledges around ‘taking back our streets’ covering antisocial behaviour, shoplifting and offroad bikes will really resonate with local communities too, and will help support policing efforts to take action.

It’s also been a great week for the long due banning of weapons that should never have been legal in the first place – there is absolutely no place for zombie knives or ninja swords on our streets.

And finally, it was great to learn of Government’s commitment to getting domestic abuse specialists in control rooms up and down the country – pleasingly, this is something we are already delivering in Northumbria – demonstrating we’re already a step ahead. A step ahead is where I want us to be - and I will keep doing all I can to ensure we are playing our part in delivering safer streets and stronger communities for the people of Northumberland, Tyne, and Wear.

Best wishes,

Susan Dungworth
Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner

Tackling retail crime

Retail crime is a big problem – it impacts us all in terms of safety, finances, and resources. I’m grateful to all who attended my Retail Roundtable in Sunderland a few weeks ago, and to Primark for hosting.

Shoplifting, threats to staff, even violence – we won’t put up with it. Government’s commitment to protecting our retail workers is hugely welcome and making assaulting shopworkers a standalone offence is a great step forward.

During our discussions national problems around how different police and store crime recording systems talk to each other were clearly causing frustrations – these problems have been here for years - and I will be feeding that back as part of my conversations with the Home Office.

I look forward to my next retail roundtable in South Shields.
Keeping students safe

September has seen both our cities welcome a wave of students to the region to study, work and of course, play.

I’m a mother and know how daunting sending your kids off to Uni can be. So, the other Sunday, I joined Northumbria Police to see their operations in place to help keep freshers safe and support local communities.

ITV Tyne Tees also joined myself, the force, & Newcastle City Council to get a behind the scenes look, which you can catch HERE.

Driving down motorbike disorder

Northumbria Police’s proactive work to tackle motorbike disorder through Operation Capio continues - with the most recent result being the seizure of two vehicles linked to anti-social behaviour in Gateshead. More good news is that officers also managed to return the bikes to their rightful owner.

We've also seen excellent results achieved by the dedicated Motorbike Disorder team for Ashington & Blyth - reducing incidents in August from 98 in 2023 to just 22 in 2024.
Project Shield Success

High visibility patrols rolled out through Project Shield have helped towards a significant decrease in serious violence across our area.

Police figures show serious violence has fallen by 23 per cent across hot spot areas, compared to the same period the year before. In Sunderland City Centre the fall has been 25 per cent - a welcome and reassuring reduction after the scenes of civil unrest earlier this year.

Did you know?

Do you know of all the ways that you can contact Northumbria Police?

From social media DM, to live web chat, to online contact form, to telephone. All methods HERE.

Great to join the force at one of their pop-up events in Blyth this afternoon to talk to the public about all things digital contact.
Safe and Found

Make sure information on vulnerable loved ones is uploaded to Northumbria’s Safe and Found Online system.

The wonderful North East charity Silverline Memories recognises how invaluable the initiative is and it’s great to be working with them to encourage others to raise awareness and encourage others living with dementia to get signed up.
