A huge from hello from the Great Science Share for Schools team!
You're here because you've been invited to take part in the Great Science Share for Schools 2023 event hosted at The University of Manchester. This information page contains further information about the event and how to register your interest in attending.

THE BIG IDEA
The Great Science Share for Schools is the award-winning campaign that invites 5-14 year olds to share their own scientific questions and investigations, to raise the profile of science in schools and communities, and to be inspired into science and engineering. If you’re not involved yet, find out more and register to take part on the website: www.greatscienceshare.org

THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER EVENT

The Great Science Share for Schools event at the University of Manchester is a celebratory day for young people to share their science with a new audience in the brand new Engineering building near Oxford Road.

  • The event will bring together approximately 30 primary schools from across Greater Manchester to share a science investigation of their choosing with each other.
  • All pupils will have a chance to share their science and visit other school stands to explore a wide range of scientific questions and evidence.
  • Every participating school will receive a certificate of engagement.
The Great Science Share for Schools is inclusive, non-competitive and collaborative, so there is NO REGISTRATION FEE for this event and we welcome pupils from a diverse range of backgrounds and interests.
YOUR PARTICIPATION
THE INVESTIGATION
Each school will be allocated a 6ft table. In advance of the event, you will need to plan and undertake a table top science investigation that can be repeated on your stand. Gathering evidence and preparing the pupils to talk to others about their enquiry and what their evidence shows is key. We ask that all investigations that are child-led with your support. Your preparation should include any resources that support your investigation.

The 2023 campaign has an overarching theme of Science Around Us, and you may wish to theme your investigation around this, but it is not a requirement.

You have received your invitation due to your involvement in the SEERIH professional learning programme, and you may decide to present an investigation related to your project work. The choice is yours with your pupils to decide. Details of your investigation will be submitted and agreed in advance by the GSSfS team.

If you have specific requirements to enable it to take place we will do our best to accommodate them. If we find that a number of schools are showcasing similar investigations, we may ask you to make adaptations.

PUPIL POETRY AND DISPLAYS
As part of this year’s GSSfS, we’ve teamed up with Creative Manchester to encourage young people to share their science creatively through the Great Science Poetry Share. We’re asking that each school prepare a piece of poetry written by the class to be shared at the event. Poems may be published in the event brochure, or displayed on a pop-up stand created by your school.  Stimulus to get pupils thinking poetically about the Science Around Us are available on the GSSfS website. Find out more here.
New for 2023 - Profiling Places & Faces of Science in your locality.
A pop-up stand is a great way to enable other pupils to share their science. The idea is that you will be provided with a cardboard stand for your pupils to go to town with collage, photos, words etc. that represent science around you.  We will explain more about this at an induction webinar for event schools.
This is a fun and creative opportunity to get the whole class involved.
