Water safety is important all through the year, but more so when the weather starts to get warmer and more children are tempted to swim/play in open water sites. Drowning accidents are especially high in the summer months and over the last few years, there has been too many tragedies that could have been avoided.
WSCP wants to remind all children and young people that even in the summer months water, particular at open water and inland sites, such as canals and reservoirs, is often much colder than it looks. Entering cold water can cause cold water shock, reducing the ability to swim and self rescue.

WSCP have a dedicated water safety webpage, which contains key safety messages for children and young people about how to stay safe in and around the water, and additional advice and information about what to do if they get into difficulty. The webpage also contains some hard hitting videos to bring home the reality of the dangers of water and there are resources available for all ages. The page has been created in consultation with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) UK. Please click here to take a look. 2. Safeguarding Week 2023

Safeguarding Week 2023 takes place from the 19th - 23rd June. During the week there will be a range of FREE learning and development offers across the district for all those who work or volunteer with children, adults and their families.
What's on offer across the week?
Wakefield Safeguarding Children Partnership, Wakefield Safeguarding Adults Board and the Safer Together Partnership are hosting a virtual Masterclass on Trauma Informed Care, a Lifespan Perspective on Wednesday 21st June at 9.15am for all those who work or volunteer with children, adults, and their families.
With input from the West Yorkshire Adversity, Risk and Resilience Steering Group, Education Psychology, the Emotional Wellbeing Team and Youth Justice as well as CAMHS and Turning Point, there will be an opportunity to share knowledge, network and learn more about being trauma aware.
Engagement is welcomed from across the partnership!

3. WSCP Instagram for Children/Young People

Do you know or work with children and young people?
WSCP has created an Instagram account designed specifically for CYP. The messaging highlights key safeguarding issues, explains what subjects such as ‘home invasion’ or ‘county lines’ are and directs children and young people to someone to talk to or agencies who can help.

4. REMINDER: Multi-Agency Safeguarding Learning for Practitioners - Survey

In recent months, Wakefield Safeguarding Children Partnership (WSCP) has launched new, free to access multi-agency offers of learning for anybody who works or volunteers with children and families on neglect and professional curiosity and challenge. These offers have only recently been launched, so we want to know as a frontline practitioner if you have heard about them. If you work or volunteer directly with children and families, please can you complete this short survey - https://forms.office.com/r/j9HsvE2hpR (takes around 5 minutes) to help provide initial feedback as to how well these offers have been communicated to you. Even if you are not a frontline practitioner, we would really appreciate it if you could share this survey please across your teams and networks to help us get a large response. Talk Relationships Online Training
NSPCC Learning has launched new online training to support secondary school leaders with delivering sex and relationships education as part of its Talk Relationships service. The new school leaders’ course aims to help leaders implement a whole-school approach and support teaching staff. Click here to access the course. London Grid for Learning have partnered with the Early Years Alliance to offer a 1 hour webinar on the 8th June, for parents/carers of children aged 0-5, about simple steps to take to keep children safe when using online devices. For more information please click here
On the 28th June there is a 1 hour webinar for professionals who are working with children in early years to discuss children's online experience. The session will explore the risks of children accessing devices, and how to best mitigate against these. To book a place click here
Let's Talk About Anxiety
Schools in Mind have launched "lets talk about anxiety", an animation and accompanying teacher toolkit.
Aimed at students aged 11 to 13, the resources will help young people to normalise, understand and manage anxious feelings. As well as the animation, which was co-created with young people, the resources include:
- Materials for delivering a lesson, including a PowerPoint, lesson plan and worksheets.
- Materials for delivering an assembly, including a PowerPoint and assembly plan.
- Guidance materials for teachers, PHSE co-ordinators and parents/carers.

6. Multi-Agency Training Dates

After the recent launch of the new MA Neglect Training in February 2023 we have had a really positive response, with nearly 50 neglect champions now on board. Please note that the Multi Agency Neglect: A shared Responsibility training is not training specifically for the Neglect Toolkit, although it is discussed and explored as one of the tools practitioners can use. Watch this space for a free recorded training session designed to help navigate you through the Neglect Toolkit. This course is delivered by the Wakefield Council Local Authority Officer (LADO) and the WSCP Safeguarding Advisor for Education Vicki Maybin. NEW - Relationship Matters: Reducing Parental Conflict Training

7. Ygam Training Oportunities

WSCP are working with Ygam, an award-winning charity, to offer fully funded, free online training on gaming and gambling harms in children and young people. Please see course details below: Fully Funded CPD for Youth Facing Professionals:This session is suitable for professionals working directly with children and young people who can deliver Ygam's resources. This includes education staff, youth workers, community volunteers and mental health specialists. 8. NCDV (National Centre for Domestic Abuse) Civil Orders Training
|
NCDV is a Community Interest Company that provides free fast legal support to those suffering domestic abuse who require a protective order. The service is available to everybody, irrespective of financial circumstances, sexual orientation, race or gender. They specialise in three types of civil domestic violence injunctions; Non-molestation Orders, Occupation Orders and Prohibited Steps Orders.
The training covers the current definition of domestic abuse, key themes of the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, the orders NCDV can obtain and their criteria/eligibility, the benefits of the orders available, the court process and how the order is served also the many ways how you can refer someone (with their consent) to NCDV.
The training will be useful for anyone who works with or comes in to contact with those suffering domestic abuse.
Learning objectives
- Knowledge of the current definition of domestic abuse.
- Awareness of the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 and it’s key themes.
- Understanding of the orders NCDV can obtain for those suffering domestic abuse and their criteria/eligibility.
- Awareness of Legal Aid funding and self-representing as a Litigant in Person
- Awareness of the benefits of the orders available.
- Understanding the civil court process in obtaining a non-molestation order and how the order is served.
- Knowledge of the many ways how you can refer someone (with their consent) to NCDV.

9. YHMAST Regional Webinar Series: Child Sexual Abuse

Yorkshire and Humber Multi-Agency Safeguarding Trainers Group (YHMAST) are delighted to be hosting these webinar events across the Yorkshire and Humber region. All webinars will be delivered by experts from The Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse (CSA Centre), a multi-disciplinary team, funded by the Home Office, hosted by Barnardo’s and working closely with key partners from academic institutions, local authorities, health, education, police and the voluntary sector. 10. Foundation Training - Introduction to Adversity, Trauma, Resilience & Trauma Informed Practice

Wakefield Young Lives Consortium (YLC) in association with Warren Larking Associates, are delivering "Introduction to Adversity, Trauma, Resilience & Trauma Informed Practice" training. The training will be interactive and a mix of information giving, discussion, video and reflection, and the sessions are delivered online and face-to-face. Content covered includes:
- Introductions & reflection on purpose.
- Self-care and acknowledging trauma affects most of us.
- Doing more of the same won’t work – the case for trauma informed practice and a commitment to prevention and early help.
- What is Trauma? – What are the different types of trauma
- Trauma and mental health diagnosis
- The stress response, survival and adaptation.
- Adverse childhood experiences (ACES) – key research findings & implications.
- How and why does adversity in childhood often (but not always) have such long-lasting impacts?

11. Why Speech, Language and Communication Matters - Webinar

On Monday 12th June 10am - 12pm, Public Health are hosting a Speech, Language and and Communication webinar. This live interactive webinar will cover:
- Sharing the Wakefield SLC strategy for everyone working with children
- Exploring ideas and activities to support early years communication, language development and the learning environment
- Insights into the crucial role health visitors play in child development and early identification of SLC needs
- The role of libraries in supporting early years development and beyond
- Learn how families can access free books through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to support early reading.

13. How An Arrest for Online Offending Impacts the Family

On the 6th July The Lucy Faithful Foundation are hosting a webinar exploring how an arrest for online offending impacts the family. This session is aimed at any practitioner who works with children and families (with 850 arrests a month, this could impact people anywhere) especially police, social services and education. 15. Online Safety - Information For Parents

ChatGP
Not sure of what this is? In summary it is an artificial intelligence chatbox that can be found online. ChatGP generates content and answers based on a user's question. Childnet have put together some helpful information for parents/carers which explains artificial intelligence (AI) and ChatGP, what it can/can't do and importantly the safety considerations. Virtual Reality
Children using virtual reality (VR) headsets, is at present, in the minority possibly due to the cost. However a number of children are now using VR and generally say it is a very positive, fun experience. 17. Child Exploitation - Know The Signs
|
Do you know the signs of child exploitation? We may think everything is fine with our children and young people, but do you know for sure they are safe? Signs of exploitation to look our for include:
- A change in behaviour.
- Unexplained injuries or recurring injuries.
- Increased or secretive online use including social media and messaging platforms.
- Change in friends, falling out with old friends suddenly and seeming more popular.
- Missing from home or education settings at times without parental consent or explanation.
In the evolving world of technology, it is becoming increasingly easy for child exploiters to stay masked and hidden online. By being watchful and staying interested in a child’s online engagement parents/carers/professionals can spot the signs of exploitation. If you are concerned, don’t ignore it, report it, call 03458 503 503. For emergencies, contact the police on 999. Online Safety
South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL) has published a podcast episode which discusses having conversations with young people about pornography. The podcast looks at how to address young people’s understanding of relationships and body image in pornography and highlights the challenges of addressing pornography in schools.

Serious Youth Violence
Human rights organisation Liberty and eight other grassroots groups and campaigning organisations have published a report on policing and serious youth violence in the UK. The report sets out new approaches to youth violence which include: investment in trauma-informed and racially literate support for young people to prevent harm; changes to policing; and suggestions around the education system.

19. Children's Oral Health

Wakefield Public Health have a developed a resource pack offering advice to parents and carers on how to look after children's teeth, from the first tooth to their teenage years. The resources pack gives useful information and tips, and resources to help parents and carers to start building a routine with their child and achieve positive oral health goals.
