For the first time, Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP), MI5, and the National Crime Agency (NCA) are jointly calling on parents and carers to support their children to be safer online, particularly during school holidays. In an unprecedented move, the three agencies have delivered a public warning to parents that online offenders will exploit the school holidays to engage in criminal acts with young people when they know less support is readily available. To find out more about the campaign please click here. 8. LiftTheBaby Safer Sleep Campaign for New Dads/Male Carers
|
The Lift The Baby campaign is aimed at promoting safer sleeping in younger babies. The move follows figures showing more than 130 babies die in the UK every year in hazardous sleeping circumstances , for example, where a parent or carer falls asleep whilst holding the baby, unwittingly placing the child at risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The risks are exacerbated if the adult has been smoking, drinking using drugs or heavy medication or is excessively tired. But in most cases, if adults follow the safe sleeping guidelines, these deaths are completely avoidable. Through funding, the Wakefield Council and Wakefield Families Together logos have been included on this video, to enable wider sharing and promotion of this important campaign. You can check it our by clicking here. For more information on Safeguarding Babies and Infants, please click here

17. Alliance for Youth Justice - From Exploited to Exploiter
|
The Alliance for Youth Justice have published a briefing titled "From exploited to exploiter? Preventing the unjust criminalisation of victims of child criminal exploitation in the transition to adulthood".
The briefing sets out characteristics of an effective response that protects, rather than punishes, criminally exploited young adults and calls for:
- Ensure safeguarding and support extends beyond 18, with a distinct, developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed approach for criminally exploited young adults.
- A cross-government taskforce and concordat on criminal exploitation, to tackle policy silos and ensure multi agency working.
- Support police, prosecutors and courts to recognise young adults' continued vulnerability and complex exploitative dynamics, and make use of safeguards and protections against prosecution.
- Sustainable voluntary sector support to provide trusted, long-term relationships into adulthood.
- Review the National Referral Mechanism and Section 45 of the Modern Slavery Act to strengthen their ability to support criminally exploited young adults.
- Ensure prosecutors properly apply the CPS public interest test and continually review cases to ensure victims of CCE don't end up in court.
- The new offence of child criminal exploitation created under the Crime and Policing Bill must be accompanied by statutory guidance and training that addresses the risk of criminalising exploited young adults and promotes a safeguarding-led response.
Exploitation doesn’t stop at 18 but protection does. Responses for children are inconsistent, and the gap only widens into adulthood. With a new CCE offence coming, safeguards are vital so exploited young adults aren’t criminalised.

19. Top Safety Tips for Families this September
|
The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) have published the following safety tips for families this September. Calling all professionals - where possible please share this important information with any parents/carers that you work with.
Baby sleeping bags warning: risk of suffocation, overheating & death
Baby sleeping bags with hoods, or those without arm openings, do not meet UK safety standards and are not permitted to be sold here. They can cause babies to suffocate, overheat or die. Yet far too many are available to buy online. In fact, a new investigation by Which? found many dangerous baby sleeping bags, similar or identical to products that have been officially recalled for suffocation risks, for sale online. Click here to learn more about dangerous baby products. Staying safe on the school run
At school drop-off and pick-up times, roads can be especially busy. This makes crossing more difficult. And it can be really distracting for children who may forget their road safety rules, especially if they spot a friend across the road. Luckily, there are plenty of things you can do to help keep them safe. To access top tips and activity sheets please click here
Did you know nappy sacks can kill small babies? Babies naturally grasp things and pull them to their mouths, but then find it difficult to let go. Flimsy nappy sacks can easily cling to a baby’s face as they breathe in and cause suffocation or choking. Please keep them out of reach.
Click here to learn more about the dangers.
The silent killer: Carbon monoxide Carbon monoxide (CO) is known as the silent killer. The highly poisonous gas can kill quickly and without warning, as you cannot see it, taste it, or smell it. Young children are especially vulnerable to the effects of CO and may experience symptoms sooner than a healthy adult. That’s why this year’s Gas Safety Week is all about keeping our family and those around us gas safe.

The NSPCC have recently released the following updates which may be of interest to professionals working with children and families, and to share with parents/carers where applicable. Case Reviews Six new case reviews have been added to the collection this month featuring issues including child criminal exploitation, domestic abuse, filicide and child neglect. Please click here to read the reviews.
Mandatory Reporting NSPCC Learning is offering free mandatory reporting webinars on the proposed statutory duty to report child sexual abuse in England. As part of the Crime and Policing Bill, individuals undertaking key roles with responsibility for children and young people will be required to report sexual abuse when they are made aware of it. There will be a live webinar on 23 September ahead of the on-demand webinars, covering: who the duty will apply to; what should be reported; and the process for reporting. The webinars aim to help professionals understand the proposed duty and how it will impact them and their organisation.
Find out more: Mandatory reporting webinars
Early Years The Department for Education's (DfE) latest version of the Early years foundation stage (EYFS) statutory framework for England has now come into force (effective from 1st September 2025). The NSPCC Learning CASPAR briefing summarises the safeguarding and welfare requirements in the framework for childminders and group and school-based providers. Sexually Coerced Extortion NSPCC Learning has published a Why language matters blog exploring the problems with the term 'sextortion.' The blog explores how using the term can minimise children’s experiences and overlook the complexity and multifaceted nature of the issue. It highlights how professionals should use the term 'sexually coerced extortion' when reporting and recording this type of abuse, while staying aware of and reflecting the language children and young people use.
