COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER
WINTER 2025

Dear $show_clientname,

As we approach the end of the year, we’re delighted to share the latest news and milestones from London Biggin Hill Airport.

From the completion of our runway resurfacing project to our ongoing community outreach initiatives, this season highlights our commitment to supporting economic growth and fostering local partnerships.

We hope you enjoy this edition of our newsletter and thank you for being an essential part of our journey. From all of us at London Biggin Hill Airport, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Completion of our Runway Resurfacing Project

We’re pleased to announce that London Biggin Hill Airport has completed its runway project - an important investment that will ensure our infrastructure remains safe, resilient and fit for the future.

The resurfacing work, along with new lighting and updated weather and visibility systems, has enhanced the durability and performance of our runway, ensuring it continues to meet the highest standards for years to come.

Our newly upgraded runway now features:
- A fully resurfaced, grooved runway - more durable and designed to last
- Advanced LED & centreline lighting for improved pilot visibility
- New 24/7 AUTO-METAR & upgraded IRVR system for clearer operational data
- Continued confidence in the airport’s role as a stable local employer

This project reflects our ongoing responsibility to keep investing in the essential infrastructure that supports our community and local economy.

We’d like to extend a sincere thank you to our local community, customers, and partners for your patience and understanding while this important work was carried out - we truly appreciate your support throughout the project.

Update on AA-PURE Taxiway Trial

Earlier this year, we became the first airport in the UK to trial a non-crude oil-based asphalt binder - and the world’s first to do so on an operational taxiway. Known as AA-PURE, the asphalt binder is made from renewable resources, specifically a combination of naturally occurring hydrocarbon resin and an organic extract.

We were pleased to welcome representatives from Associated Asphalt, London Gatwick, and Heathrow Airport back to London Biggin Hill to review the progress of the trial. This follow-up visit provided an opportunity to assess how the material has performed under operational conditions and to share insight into its potential applications across the wider aviation sector.

Exciting to see innovation in action - and even more so to be leading conversations about how we can build a more sustainable future for aviation operations.

Students continue to reach for the skies on Futures Week

In October, we had the privilege of hosting our latest Futures Week programme. Designed to inspire young people to consider a career in aviation, our bi-annual event gives fifteen 15-18 year olds the opportunity to explore the different roles available within the aviation industry.

Throughout the week, participants took part in practical workshops, insightful tours and mentoring sessions with professionals from across our on-site business community, which is home to more than 70 resident aviation companies.

Our team looks forward to following the progress of this brilliant cohort and hopes Futures Week has helped inform their choices as they take their next steps.

Aged 15-18 years old, interested in aviation & eager to learn more about careers in the industry? Applications are currently open for Futures Week in February 2026, and will close at 4pm on Monday 5th January.

Proud to Support: Our Community

From supporting the next generation with our early careers programme to giving back to a range of local initiatives, we're proud to support our community so that when the airport succeeds, so do local people. Here's a snapshot of the initiatives we've been proud to support in the last quarter:

Arts & Culture: Sponsoring bursaries for three individuals to participate in the Churchill Theatre’s West End Experience, helping aspiring performers bring their passion to the stage.

Sports Talent: Supporting local athletes including basketball star Jack Rye, swimming talent Henry Shepherd, and women’s rugby standout Iona McCusker.

Community Partnerships: We’re excited to extend our partnership with Bromley FC's Community Trust for the next three seasons, backing their women & girls strategy to promote inclusivity and participation in sport.

Fundraising & Charitable Support: Proudly supporting local young person, Annabelle, by match-funding her efforts for BBC Children in Need, and match-funding donations for Bromley Borough Foodbank, helping provide essential support to families in need.

Through these initiatives, we continue to champion local talent, foster opportunities, and support meaningful causes across our community.

The Above & Beyond Bromley Business Awards

We were delighted to support the Above & Beyond Bromley Business Awards (The ABBBAs) again this year - an event that celebrates the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit in Bromley.

Our CEO, David Winstanley, presented the awards for Best Creative, Growth or Innovation (Quest Soul Theatre C.I.C) and Best Business - Independent (JNJ Building Solutions), whilst our Head of Public Affairs & Community Engagement, Matthew Amer, presented all winners with sparkling wine from local supplier, Squerryes.

Congratulations to all the nominees, finalists and winners on their achievements, and to the team at Life In Magazines for organising such a magnificent event!

Where Theatre Takes Off: London Biggin Hill Airport sponsors this year's panto!

We’re delighted to be supporting this year’s pantomime, Beauty and the Beast, at the Churchill Theatre, Bromley. Our mascots, Captains Mary & Merlin, had a fantastic time meeting the cast at the media day recently - a brilliant start to the festive season!

London Biggin Hill Airport is proud to support local arts, culture and businesses, and to continue our collaboration with the Churchill Theatre after sponsoring places for young performers on their ‘West End Experience’ this summer.

If you’re looking for a magical family day out, make sure Beauty and the Beast is on your Christmas list - secure your tickets here!

Captain Merlin turns on the Biggin Hill Christmas Lights!

We’re proud to be one of the sponsors of the Biggin Hill Christmas lights for another year, helping to bring festive cheer to the heart of our community.

We joined residents at the New Life Church in Biggin Hill recently for the official switch on, where our very own Captain Merlin had the honour of turning on the lights!

Seeing families come together and the excitement on children’s faces made the moment truly special. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate. We’re grateful to be part of such a vibrant and supportive community, and wish all our neighbours a joyful and bright festive season.

Special delivery for Children's Ward @ The PRUH

This Christmas, we've had the joy of delivering Christmas presents to the children’s ward at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough, Orpington.

Our cheerful mascot bears, Captains Mary & Merlin, joined in to make the day extra special, spreading smiles and festive magic to patients, their families, and nursing staff.

At London Biggin Hill, we’re committed to supporting our local community and it’s moments like these that remind us why supporting our community is so important - bringing happiness where it matters most.
