Safeguarding & Well-being Newsletter

As we move towards the end of a busy term, we wanted to share an update from our Safeguarding & Well-being Team at York College. This newsletter highlights some of the key activities that have taken place this term, along with a look at what's coming up. We hope this gives you reassurance that your young person is well-supported within the College community.

What we've been doing this term...

Well-being Week

Earlier this term we hosted Well-being Week  to encourage and support awareness of mental health and wellbeing within College.

This focused on:
  • Acts of kindness workshops, encouraging students to pause, reflect and spread positivity
  • Guest speakers providing honest insights and education regarding implications of drugs and alcohol misuse
  • Menfulness gave inspiring talks, shining a spotlight on men’s mental health
  • Local service stalls giving students direct access to support and to increase awareness  of what is available in the community

Call It Out

We are actively running ‘Call it Out’ campaign to raise awareness on how to report problematic behaviour and how to handle difficult situations.  To further support students to feel safe and respected in College and the wider community.  This has been made fun and engaging using interactive activities, which have been well received by students.

To further support this initiative Big Conversation Workshops by Leaders Unlocked on variety of topics: healthy relationships, gender violence, drugs & county lines, inclusivity & discrimination and online safety have been taking place this April.

Together Through Loss

A new weekly drop‑in space is available for students experiencing bereavement, offering a calm environment and a supportive listening ear. A student led space which we hope will continue into the next academic year.

It's a relaxed space for anyone who's been through loss. Students can drop in for company, a chat, calming activities or just a peaceful break.

Support for Exam Stress

As exams approach, many students feel excited to show what they’ve learned — but it can also be a time of pressure and overwhelm. Looking after yourself is essential. We encourage students to prioritise rest, movement, and good nutrition to stay balanced and focused.

The Well-being Team is here throughout the year for anyone who needs to talk, get reassurance, or simply take a breather. Our Open Door drop‑in runs daily from 12.30pm–1.30pm, offering a calm space and supportive conversation whenever it’s needed.  Over the exam period we are opening our door wider to students between 9.00am-10.00am, 12.30pm–1.30pm and 3.00pm–4.00pm.
