Pharmacy First: supporting access to NHS care

As the NHS launches Pharmacy First today, we wanted to thank you for making a vital
contribution to healthcare for patients and local communities. The launch of Pharmacy First
in over 10,000 community pharmacies is a huge opportunity for community pharmacy to step
further into its clinical future, working more closely with general practices as part of the
integrated NHS primary care team.

General Practice community engagement to reduce health inequalities in London

FAO: Primary care colleagues, including ICB primary care leads, general practitioners, nurses, practice managers, social prescribers, and other clinical and non-clinical staff.

Invitation for a short survey and focus group discussions.

General Practice in London is facing substantial system pressures and challenges. Yet there is continuous demonstration of exceptional commitment and good practice in tackling health inequalities. The momentum in London is towards the strategic direction laid out by the CORE20PLUS5 approaches and the Fuller stocktake report. Specifically, there are many examples of outstanding work using community engagement approaches to tackle health inequalities across the region.

Measles

We are seeing an increase in cases of measles, with outbreaks detected in the West Midlands and London. This has been declared as a national incident. We are warning that further outbreaks of measles will spread to other towns and cities unless urgent action is taken to increase measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination uptake in areas at greatest risk.

This week UKHSA has published the latest number of laboratory confirmed measles cases in England in an updated epidemiological overview. The data published in this epidemiological overview covers the dates between 1 October, 2023 and 23 January, 2024 and is currently provisional. Updates will be published every Thursday going forward.

The below may be useful to stakeholders looking to help us raise awareness of measles and the MMR vaccine:
  • UKHSA has produced an updated version of our measles communications toolkit. This includes social media materials (animations, videos, static images and GIFs) to raise awareness amongst the public, alongside resources for health professionals, for use on stakeholders’ channels. If you have any questions, contact Tycie and Freya in the first instance.
  • A video of Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, Dr Colin Campbell, explains who can have the MMR vaccine and why the World Health Organization (WHO) has set an MMR vaccination target of 95% of the population.
  • The Department for Education has published a new blog aimed at parents and carers: ‘What to do if you think your child has measles and when to keep them off school’
Call for images: to support our national and local communications to raise awareness of measles we are looking to collect a variety of different images of the signs and symptoms of measles. This includes how the disease presents on black and brown skin. If you have any images that you are able to share please email: externalaffairs@ukhsa.gov.uk

Education and training

NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme (T2DR) webinar + delayed start date

There is a delay in the launch of the T2DR Programme in NW London.

This is due to Counterweight needing to set up a NHS generic e-mail for practices to make the referral process more straightforward. This has caused a short delay in the programme's launch which was scheduled for 1st February. The tentative go live date is now Monday 12th February. However, we will confirm when the programme is live as things all hinges on getting the nhs.net email created.

In the meantime, Counterweight invites you to join the webinar available on MS Teams:

Thursday 15 February 2024, 12noon – 1.00pm
