Museums Learning Newsletter: December 2024

Welcome to your latest edition of the Museums Learning newsletter.

It seems no time at all since we welcomed schools back after the summer, and here we are almost at the end of Term 2!
We've had visits to the museums from thousands of children, taught loads of workshops and loaned many boxes of resources. We also hosted six performances of a Reduced History of Bristol at M Shed and launched a children's story book about Doris the Pliosaur.

We hope you have a relaxing break and look forward to welcoming you to our museums in 2025.

What's new?

New book launched - Is that Doris?

Our Learning Manager at Bristol Museums has worked with colleagues to create a children's book featuring Doris the pliosaur. The pliosaur fossil was the centrepiece of an exhibition at the museum in 2017/18, and a model of her 'swims' in the rear hall of the museum above the café.

The full-colour book has been beautifully illustrated by Tilia Rand-Bell and published by Bristol Books. Copies are being given free to all primary schools and public libraries in Bristol.
The book and an adorable cuddly Doris are available from our museum shops.

Coming soon for 2025

Sounds of the South West Learning Resources
Earlier this year, Bristol Archives got £175,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for a new project called Sounds of the South West. Gemma from our Learning team is part of a project to create resources for schools and home educators. Look out for these resources in the New Year, using newly digitized recordings about the opening of Clifton Suspension Bridge in 1864, and stories of Bristol giants Vincent and Goram, who, according to folklore, created Avon Gorge.

British Science Week 7 to 16 March 2025
To celebrate British Science Week 2025 we will be collaborating with the University of Bristol to offer special Rocks & Fossils workshops for schools and home educating families.

Chocolate Week 1 to 4 April 2025
Discover the story of Bristol's chocolate heritage in a week of workshops where children will be transported back in time to the many chocolate factories of our city, learning through role play and object handling.

Home Education sessions
We look forward to our next workshops for Home Educating families in Spring 2025.  Details will be on the website soon.

School workshops in 2025

Our most popular workshops are still Ancient Egypt at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, and Bristol at War: the Home Front at M Shed. We will be introducing some new brand new workshops in 2025 and expanding our loan box collection to include some popular curriculum topics. All will be revealed in the New Year!

As usual, we will be hosting special events including British Science Week, Chocolate Week, Roman villa life and Dino Takeover. There will be a special storytelling week at M Shed, linked with the KS1/2 Literacy curriculum.

Terms 3 and 4 are already looking busy with school bookings so contact us soon to book yours in!

Spotlight on.........

Clifton College

Students from our Learning Sponsor 2024-26 have been busy on various projects with Bristol Museums. They have been visiting the museums practicing their photography skills, taking photos of staff for new resources about museum careers, and recording short films for a new access resource.

We have enjoyed their enthusiasm and look forward to seeing the end results.
