Museums Learning Newsletter Spring 2025

We are moving apace into terms 5 and 6. Where does the time go?

We have had a busy few months with lots of you coming along to our school workshops and home educating family sessions.

We have enjoyed Rocks & Fossils Week at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery where we had experts from University of Bristol come and inspire children. More recently, and aptly for Easter, we held our Bristol and Chocolate workshops at M Shed.

Is that Doris?

All primary schools in Bristol will soon be receiving a FREE copy of this story book for their school library. Based on the pliosaurus fossil in the museum's collections, children learn about the Jurassic animals that lived millions of years ago in the place we now call Bristol. The Friends of Bristol Museums, Galleries & Archives have generously funded the production of this book.

Kings Weston Roman Villa

Kings Weston Roman Villa will be open for pre-booked school visits in June, early July and September. These special Curator-led workshops offer an unique opportunity to explore the site, and discover more about the Roman roots of this part of Bristol. Local schools can visit for £1 per pupil!

Sounds of the South West teaching resources available now

We recently held a virtual twilight session for teachers to introduce our exciting new resources for primary schools. In collaboration with the Sounds of the South West project, which is dedicated to preserving at-risk audio history in the region, and local animator Katy Ross, we have created two engaging animations using audio from the archives. These animations bring to life the tale of the two Bristol giants and the story of the first person to cross the Clifton Suspension Bridge, making them perfect for classroom lessons.

Teacher Feedback:

"Resources and animations are great. I will be sharing with the rest of my colleagues."

"We study Brunel so will definitely be making use of these resources in the classroom."
