Museums Learning Newsletter Summer 2025

As we approach the summer holidays, we hope you're looking forward to some well-deserved rest and relaxation. While the break is a great time to recharge, we're also excited to share what's coming up for Term 1 in the Autumn.

We have a fantastic line-up of new learning opportunities, including our Tudor loan box and webinar launching in September, new workshops such as Mary Anning (KS1) and Romans in Bristol (KS2), and events around our 2025-26 Learning theme of 'Stories'.

This year we launched our Is that Doris? children's book featuring our famous Pliosaurus, and are pleased to say most Bristol primary schools have now received their free copy.

Happy holidays and see you in the new (academic) year!

Kings Weston Roman Villa

Did you know that there’s the remains of a small Roman villa in Bristol? Schools can come for a curator-led tour and see some Roman walls, mosaic floors, underfloor heating and a bath suite.

Please contact us for the latest dates when this historic site is available for visits (open between April and September only) and current charges. Home educating groups, of at least 8 children, can also book a visit (subject to availability).

Significant Dates - new webinar and assemblies programme

Starting autumn 2025, we are launching a series of webinars and assemblies for schools. These sessions will coincide with important times of the year, to mark events such as Black History Month, International Women's Day, Fairtrade Week and special events relating to museum exhibitions.

With the expertise of our team and fascinating objects and documents from our collection, these Significant Dates webinars and assemblies are a great way for children to learn about these topics with a unique Bristol perspective.

We will update you further with this new offer in the autumn term.

Theme of the year: Stories

Our focus for the next academic year is Literacy. We'll be exploring lots of stories about our city and its history; the stories behind some of our objects and artworks in the collections, and Bristol people (both famous and little known).

We have a variety of events and learning opportunities planned throughout the year. These include new Story Box sessions for EYFS and families, as well as a week of workshops for schools with professional storytellers at M Shed.

Workshops

*Coming in the autumn*

Workshop: Mary Anning (KS1)
We are privileged to have some of palaeontologist Mary Anning's fossil discoveries in Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, so we have created this workshop where children can learn about and explore fascinating fossils from the Jurassic era.

Workshop: Romans in Bristol (KS2)
To complement Bristol's very own Roman villa in Lawrence Weston, this workshop enables children to investigate everyday life with real and replica artefacts, and replica costume.

These two workshops are a new addition to our extensive programme of workshops at Bristol Museums & Art Gallery, M Shed and Blaise Museum.
