New Resource... Coming Soon!
We've supported museums with Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) through National Lottery Heritage Fund funded projects, including Travelling Together.  Informed by this work and conversations with museums along the way, we’ve developed a new e-learning resource to help more museums develop understanding and confidence to progress on their EDI journeys.
The EDI Roadmap e-learning resource has been developed with expert consultants, creatives, people bringing lived experience perspectives, and with the help of museum user testers.  Access to this e-learning resource will be free.  We will be also offering an online introduction session for museums in the south west to find out more about what it is and how you can make use of it on your EDI journey.  Look out for full details when we launch of the Roadmap in the October newsletter!

Grants update
Today we’re opening our last grant schemes of 2024 – if you haven’t applied already then now is your chance!
The Talking Nature grant encourages museums to co-develop projects with school partners to explore the natural world and consider the environmental crisis. This grant scheme is perfectly suited to museums with natural history collections, or any museum with connections to the natural world within their collections. Up to £5,000 is available per museum and the deadline for project completion is 30 January 2026.
We’re also opening round 2 of Capacity Builder, which offers grants to help develop skills and build confidence amongst those working and volunteering in museums. These grants can be used to help individuals, teams or groups of museums engage with training, development and team-building amongst other things. Need some inspiration? Take a look at what we funded in round 1.
The application deadline for both grants is 12 Noon Monday 30 September 2024.
Focus on... Green Ideas
Three great funding opportunities are now available to help museums to undertake projects on environmental issues with children and young people.

The Natural History Museum (NHM), London, is offering three slightly different grant schemes with an application deadline of Monday 16 September as part of the Fixing Our Broken Planet project:
  1. Generation Hope offers up to £2,500 for museums to engage with 15-25 year olds
  2. Interconnected: Light is aimed at a wider museum audience and has grants of up to £3,000 to help museums share exhibition content from NHM
  3. Interconnected: In-depth offers up to £10,000 for bigger projects to be delivered between 2025-27.
Full details of the three schemes on the NHM website, there is further guidance at the bottom of the page.

Get Involved with Sounds of the South West

Listen up! Bristol Archives is thrilled to introduce Sounds of the South West (SotSW), an exciting new regional project. Thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund (and National Lottery players), they’re planning to digitise and preserve over 8000 audio items from across the South West. Expert consensus states there are fewer than 12 years to preserve our threatened audio heritage.

In partnership with Archives South West, in year one SotSW will preserve 1000 audio items, provide training to people working with audio collections, and pilot local engagement activities to share the recordings.
Then, they’ll submit a report to the Heritage Fund and, if approved, begin three further years of preserving and sharing our region’s audio heritage.

For further information, please contact Heather Milward or Katie Scaife.
Tell Museum Development England your Needs – Survey Now Live

Museum Development South West teams up with the other four Museum Development areas to scope further opportunities around Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).

You are invited to take part in an online survey which is part of a Museum Development England (MDE) research project looking at EDI training and development in the museum sector in England.

This project aims to support MDE to develop new national EDI programmes for the museum sector workforce (including trustees, senior leadership/senior staff and volunteers), and we'd be very grateful for your input.

Click here to take part and for further information. The survey closes on Monday 30 September.
Maritime Heritage Forum - October 2024

The UK Maritime Heritage Forum will be hosted at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall between Wednesday 2 and Friday 4 October 2024

This year’s Annual Forum will revolve around the role of museums in Britain’s Coastal Experience: from small boats to the politics of contemporary collecting. They are hosting speaker sessions on coastal communities and coastal resilience, as well as interpreting the sea and the challenges of maritime heritage conservation.

Tickets are £150 per delegate and include all Forum activities. Space is limited to 100 delegates only and booking closes on Friday 20 September at 5pm.
Learning the Sandford Way

Learning the Sandford Way is a practical skill sharing session for museum educators, co-delivered by GEM and Sandford Award on Thursday 10 October at 2pm. They’ll be looking at the six guiding principles of the Sandford Award, the award assessment and using them to chart the progress and development of your learning service. This online, interactive session is free to GEM members.
Grants
Jerwood Art Fund Commissions

Through a new partnership between Art Fund and Jerwood Foundation, these grants will support museums and galleries to commission artists – furthering the artist’s development at a pivotal stage in their careers, while enriching public collections through new contemporary art.

There will be two commissions of £70,000 - £100,000 per year over the coming three years, covering the full costs of delivering and presenting the commissions with each partner museum. Applications close Friday 1 November at 5pm.
Everyday Heritage Grants

Building on the success of the first round of Everyday Heritage Grants in 2022, Historic England are running them again this year. The grants are for creative projects that focus on heritage connecting people to historic places, specifically those people and places that are overlooked or underrepresented.

Historic England will accept proposals for projects with costs of up to £25,000 but they are keen to fund a number of smaller projects up to £10,000. Proposals must be submitted by 11.59pm, Monday 7 October 2024.
The best ways to get in touch are via the form on our website or by emailing museum.development@bristol.gov.uk
