Being in a leadership role, I’ve realised first-hand how important it is to build resilience into my day-to-day life. Let’s face it, life throws a number of challenges at all of us, and there will always be highs and lows. When the storm comes though, it is what we have already put in place that often impacts how we journey through it.
Here’s 3 of my tips to build resilience:
Prioritise your wellbeing
Admittedly, there have been times in my life where I just put my head down and kept going regardless, thinking I was invincible and didn’t need to stop. I learnt this the hard way and when I found I wasn’t a superhero, I made the conscious decision to build downtime into my life rhythm.
One simple thing I did was start the day with a walk, it helps me clear my head, gain perspective and sets me up for the day. I also made sure I prioritised things I enjoy, like going to watch a football match.
Value your friends
I can’t express enough how important it is to have 2 or 3 close friends that you can be honest with. Make time to get together with them, maybe over a meal or a coffee but the key is to be real and vulnerable. It’s ok to not be ok. We are not meant to do life alone, and we need each other for mutual support.
Adapt and keep learning
I realise this is harder for some (including me), but when things don’t go to plan then our ability to flex, adjust and learn will help us to reduce stress. I often find I need to take a moment to step away, gain perspective, and then re-engage.
