In the past two and half years, I have bought and renovated a building.
I can hardly believe it's been three months since we moved into our new building, Breathe House. It's incredible to hear such positive feedback from our team. We now have more space, faster internet, additional meeting rooms and areas to have Zoom calls without interrupting each other.
Where it began
This journey began several years ago with a vision to create a purpose-built space large enough to accommodate our business but also provide other small businesses and freelancers with facilities to be part of a wider supportive community.
We wanted to facilitate our people-first culture that values each other and provides an environment where people want to come to work but also feel part of something bigger, collaborate and be inspired.
However, the path wasn't without its challenges! After encountering several setbacks in finding the right location, we stumbled upon a disused pub that we decided we could ‘breathe’ new life into.
Despite facing numerous obstacles, we eventually got the green light to convert the old building into a modern facility incorporating not only office space but also a community cafe/bar/kitchen that will serve great coffee and food.
The Unexpected
None of us fully comprehended the extent of the renovations required. Essentially, we had to rebuild everything, from installing a new roof and windows to rewiring the entire building and reinforcing the internal structure with a lot of steel.
Although a tough journey, the outcome was worth it as we have managed to breathe new life into an old building and create a space that we all love. The offices are now operational, and we anticipate the café will be up and running later this year.
What have I learnt from this?
Firstly, when you have a vision for something, don’t give up. You have to keep pushing and overcome the obstacles.
Secondly, pivot quickly. We had to make changes quickly during the build phase, in doing so we came out with better results.
Lastly, don't think you can do it alone. This has only happened with the help of committed friends and family, for which I, am eternally grateful.
Take a look at what has kept me busy for the past 2 years.
