Heritage Open Days Registration Now OpenSeptember might feel like a long way off, but it’s never too early to think about Heritage Open Days! Registration for event hosts has now opened on the Heritage Open Days website for the 2025 festival. Heritage Open Days is the UK’s largest heritage festival. Community hosts sign up to offer free heritage events to the public over 10 days in early September, and our district always puts on a great offer. Last year, across our district over 100 volunteers hosted over 100 events attracting over 4000 visitors. This year we would love to support more people to get involved and host events to showcase our district’s amazing heritage. The theme of this year’s festival is architecture, and the festival will run from 12-21 September. Read our blog about last year’s festival here: Wakefield Heritage Open Days 2024 | Experience Wakefield

In the Veins
The Yorkshire and North East Film Archive have launched an emotional new film exploring the story of mining communities across Yorkshire and the North-East of England. It is described as a story of hardship and hope, division and defiance, perseverance and pride. It was commissioned by Teesside University with support from the AHRC.
The film contains footage of mining areas of Wakefield and Barnsley, including Castleford, and is free to watch on the Yorkshire Film Archive’s YouTube channel. It was launched at a special screening at the National Coal Mining Museum for England earlier this month.

Roman Castleford Uncovered
An exciting new digital heritage project has been launched in Castleford as part of the Our Stories project. One To One Development Trust are working with Wakefield Museums and volunteers from the Castleford Civic Society and Castleford Heritage Trust to create an exciting new digital experience introducing the town’s internationally important Roman Heritage.
The digital experience will include digital versions of Roman objects that are currently on display at Castleford Museum. These include jewellery, coins and ornate enamelled boxes used to seal letters travelling across the Roman Empire, which tell us a huge amount about life in Castleford 2000 years ago. The digital interpretation is due to be completed in September, but there will be a sneak preview of some of the work at the Castleford Roman Festival in May. More about this in a future e-news!

New Heritage Mural - The Normanton Junction Normanton Market has a brand-new mural! - 'The Normanton Junction’ by artist Harriet Colours. This wonderful new public artwork was created as part of Our Year – Wakefield District 2024's Crossings and Gateways programme which aims to bring original works of public art into Wakefield district communities. The programme continues in 2025 as a legacy of Our Year. Throughout September last year, Harriet worked extensively with the local community to engage 228 people in her design process. The final design reflects on Normanton’s proud railway heritage and highlights the vital role of the local colliery. Also referenced is Normanton’s importance as home to the North’s first postal office, made possible by the station’s critical link between Scotland and London. The design also features Lupin flowers, a nod to the wildflowers that once thrived along the railway.
