It’s been a busy few months and we have lots to share with you, from launching our lung cancer screening programme to the disappointing news of the delay to our new hospital as a result of the national review. In this newsletter edition, you can also read about the results of the NHS 2024 Staff Survey, which show year-on-year improvements we are proud of. We also held our first members' event for 2025 in February as part of the national Change NHS engagement programme - thank you to those of you who came and shared your contributions and the full write up from this is shared below.

Staff survey results show year-on-year improvements
Results from the most recent national NHS Staff Survey, received last week, show positive year-on-year improvements at Hampshire Hospitals, with staff reporting better overall engagement and improved morale. New Hospital Programme build delayed until 2037
Following the government’s review of the New Hospital Programme, our Hampshire Together programme is now scheduled to begin construction between 2037 and 2039. Whilst this delay, announced on Monday 10 January, is disappointing, we await further information before we can assess the full implications. Read more further down in this newsletter.

Hampshire Hospitals awarded Veteran Aware accreditation
We are proud to have been awarded the Veteran Aware accreditation for a second successive year as part of our work to improve care provision for veterans, members of the armed forces and their families. To achieve this, Trusts must meet eight standards including demonstrating how they identify service users from the veteran and armed forces communities, ensuring they receive appropriate care and how staff are trained to understand the needs of veterans and armed forces personnel.

Lung cancer screening programme launched
Earlier this year we launched Lung Cancer Screening in the fight against lung cancer. The screening is a straight-forward way to gain peace of mind for anyone aged from 55 to 74 who has ever smoked. Early detection is crucial: 80% of lung cancers found through the screening programme have been at stage 1 or stage 2, compared to 30% without this kind of intervention.

Celebrating 20 years of our Basingstoke DTC
Opened in 2005, our Diagnostic Treatment Centre (DTC) has grown considerably from doing relatively minor procedures to significantly more complex clinical work carried out by highly trained, specialist staff. In November 2023, the DTC was presented with an Elective Surgical Hub Accreditation by NHS England for meeting top clinical and operational standards.

Taking action against violence, aggression and abuse in our hospitals
We believe that everyone has the right to feel secure at work, to be respected, and to be free from any form of physical or verbal abuse. While the majority of our patients and visitors show appreciation and respect, the actions of a small minority can significantly impact the professional and personal lives of our staff. Any form of violence or aggression towards our staff is not acceptable. A campaign has therefore been launched to tackle this and take steps towards a safer workplace.

Hampshire Together: Modernising our Hospitals and Health Services update
|
On Monday 20 January 2025, the government made an announcement following the conclusion of the national New Hospital Programme review. Our programme, Hampshire Together, is in Wave 3 of the New Hospital Programme and is scheduled to begin construction between 2037 and 2039. Our project now has a cost estimate of £2 billion to enable us to modernise our hospitals and health services for the future.
As a programme, together with partners, we are now looking at what this delay means for our plans, exploring what the implications are and ensuring the valued staff within our hospitals are able to provide outstanding care, and sustainable services into the future, for our patients.

Beauman Chong, Public Governor for Mid and East Hampshire
|
"The NHS plays a key role in our community and I'm really passionate about doing the right thing for our population. I believe most of us can contribute and make small improvements for our hospitals. I always encourage everyone working within the health service to ask themselves “what would I do if this money was mine?” before contracts are signed and decisions are made and it’s important we keep people at the heart of everything we do. As a Governor of 5 years, I have been and will always be keen to hear from our communities about what is important to you and what challenges you face to help us to continue doing better every day."
