News

Welcome to my latest and final newsletter! Yes, this will be my last, but you can find out more below if you wish to keep up to date with sector news.

There’s not been much happening recently so I’ve not a lot to tell you. However, there will be a new teaching qualification – see below.

Update regarding teaching qualifications

  • The Diploma in Education and Training (DET) Level 5 is due to be phased out from September 2024. In its place comes the Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills) Level 5+. At the moment, this is going by the acronym DiT.
  • Centres can register learners on the current DET until 31st August 2024.
  • The DiT qualification includes 250 hours on placement (150 teaching hours with age 14+ and 100 other duties e.g. meetings/CPD) at two locations, and includes 20 hours of virtual teaching. There will be 10 observations to groups of at least 10 learners.
  • Two local mentors will be needed to support the learner: a subject specialist mentor and a pastoral support mentor.
  • Level 2 maths and English are an entry requirement.
  • Awarding organisations (AOs) will write the qualification specification and unit content. Guidance will therefore differ between AOs.
  • The DfE confirmed that qualifications created under this framework will be eligible to receive public funding from 1 September 2024 (subject to completion of required Student Loans Company processes).
  • The DiT does not include the Minimum Core, which still applies to the current CET and DET qualifications.
  • Information regarding the DiT can be found on the ETF website.
  • The qualification content will be based on the Occupational Standards from the Learning and Skills Teacher Apprenticeship.
Your awarding organisation will be able to give you more details. Please contact them to find out if they will be offering it.

Current qualifications

I don't have any news yet about any changes to the AET/CET, Assessor or Quality Assurance qualifications.

Resources for the DiT

My DET resources will be updated and available for the DiT, hopefully by August, ready for the start date in September. They will be produced, managed and sold by Gavin Lumsden (see image below) of Essential Teaching UK. Please sign up to Gavin’s mailing list if you would like to be kept up to date about this.

Gavin is an experienced teacher educator, he holds a Degree in Education, a Certificate in Education, QTLS status and is working towards ATS status.

A dedicated area of his website will be available to purchase and download the resources.

There will also be a link from my website when it's available.

Gavin will be speaking at the SET Annual Conference on 16th January if you are attending and would like to meet him.

He is also writing regular articles for the FE LinkedIn group. If you are not already a member, please feel free to join.

Text book for the DiT

I will be co-authoring a new text book for the DiT with Gavin Lumsden (above). I wasn't going to write any more books, but this was too good an opportunity to miss!

We are hoping the book will be available by August, ready for the September start date of the qualification.

The content will also be applicable to those working towards the Learning and Skills Teacher Apprenticeship.

Please sign up to Gavin’s mailing list if you would like to be kept up to date about this.

The book will be in the same style as my previous text books.

Transfer of mailing list

I did mention in my last newsletter (summer 2022, which seems a long time ago now) that it would probably be my last. This is because I’ve cut back on my educational work and my use of social media.

In line with my data protection policy, I want to give you two weeks’ notice that I will be transferring for free, my mailing list. This will only go to Gavin Lumsden of Essential Teaching UK and will only be your name and email address.

Please scroll down this message and unsubscribe if you wish to opt out from being transferred.

Thank you for being on my mailing list and for supporting my work over the years. However, I do still use X (formerly Twitter) if I have anything important to let you know about, and I will be keeping my website up to date.
